Scott McTominay to Undergo Surgery for Heart Issue

Scott McTominay will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League campaign after Napoli confirmed the midfielder is to undergo corrective surgery for a minor heart issue.

The Serie A club announced on Tuesday that the former Manchester United man has been diagnosed with “a mild benign arrhythmia” – an abnormal or irregular heartbeat that doctors have deemed non-serious and not a significant threat to his overall health.

Even so, the problem is enough to halt his season, briefly but decisively. McTominay will sit out Napoli’s fixtures in September, including next week’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, a match in which he was expected to play a central role.

The timing also hits Scotland hard. New head coach Sebastien Pocognoli will be without one of his key leaders for his first four games in charge: a double-header against Slovenia, followed by meetings with Switzerland and North Macedonia in the Nations League.

Medical Update

Napoli outlined the plan in a short medical update.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation in the coming days,” the club said.

The procedure, commonly used to treat irregular heart rhythms, is designed to correct the issue and allow the player to return to full training.

Napoli added: “He will be available again after the international break.”

For club and country, the message is clear: a brief pause now, with the expectation that one of their most influential midfielders will be back in the engine room once the international window closes.
