Sheffield Wednesday Sign Liverpool Winger Kieran Morrison on Loan
Sheffield Wednesday have moved to sharpen their attack with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison.
The 19-year-old, a right-sided livewire and full Northern Ireland international, heads to Hillsborough after a breakout year in Liverpool’s academy and his first steps into senior football.
A rising talent leaves Anfield – for now
Morrison, born in Manchester but capped by Northern Ireland, caught Liverpool’s eye at Under-21 level last season. He drove their Premier League 2 campaign with 15 goals and seven assists, form that earned him a place on the shortlist for the Premier League 2 Player of the Year award.
Liverpool moved quickly to secure his future, handing him a new four-year contract in May. The club then began to plot his next step. That pathway now runs through Sheffield.
He has already had a taste of the big stage. Morrison made his first-team debut for Liverpool in October, coming on in the Carabao Cup last-16 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. He then appeared off the bench in the FA Cup win away at Wolves in March, another small but significant marker of Jürgen Klopp’s faith in his development.
International recognition followed. In June, Morrison made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in their friendly win over Guinea, capping a whirlwind few months.
“The rebuild is now”
For Wednesday, this is a signing that fits the mood of a club trying to reset and climb again.
Speaking to the Owls’ website, Morrison made it clear he sees this as more than just a stepping stone.
“It’s a massive club with great history and even better fans. Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it,” he said.
“It’s a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.
“I want to show the fans, the gaffer and everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here.”
There was no sense of hesitation about the move. If anything, Wednesday had to keep up with his enthusiasm.
High-intensity fit
Owls sporting director Simon Wilson believes the winger’s style dovetails with the demands at Hillsborough.
“Kieran is a player with huge potential,” Wilson said. “During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.
“Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person.
“It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran’s enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started.”
That eagerness now meets expectation. Hillsborough can be unforgiving, but it can also supercharge a young attacker who plays on the front foot and embraces the stage.
Morrison will not have to wait long to feel it. He is available for selection for Thursday’s League One game at home to Bradford City, and if Wednesday want to show they are serious about that rebuild, unleashing one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects under the lights would be quite a way to start.
