Slavko Vincic Retires After Landmark World Cup Final

Slavko Vincic chose the grandest stage in football to write his final line.

The Slovenian referee, who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19 in the United States, has retired from professional refereeing, the Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) announced on Monday.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” the NZS stated on its website. A simple line, but one that closes a remarkable journey.

At 46, Vincic walked away having reached the pinnacle of his profession. By handling the World Cup final, the federation of the small Adriatic nation underlined that he had “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history.” That is not routine praise. In refereeing circles, a World Cup final is the ultimate badge of trust.

The recognition did not stop with the appointment itself. To cap his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the best referee of the World Cup, highlighting his “clear and firm disciplinary control that characterizes elite refereeing.” In a tournament of high stakes and higher tensions, his authority and calm under pressure stood out.

Italy added its own seal of approval. Vincic received the prestigious “Giulio Campanati” award for his work at the 2026 World Cup, a prize that traditionally goes to officials who embody the highest standards of the game.

For most referees, a career fades out on a quiet domestic fixture or a low-key international. Vincic’s ended with Spain, Argentina, the world watching, and the whistle of a man who knew he had nothing left to prove.
