Southampton Signs Divin Mubama on Loan from Manchester City
Southampton move fast in the market – and Thursday underlined it.
On the day they sanctioned a £30m sale of Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles to Fulham, Saints plugged a major gap at the other end of the pitch, bringing in Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan.
It is a bold, attacking bet. Mubama is 21, still sharpening his edges, but the trajectory of his young career suggests a forward ready to jump a level if given a proper stage.
A striker with a point to prove
Mubama arrives on the south coast off the back of a mixed year at Stoke City. He scored five times in 28 appearances, a solid if unspectacular return, before his season was jolted by a ligament injury in January during a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers – a challenge Stoke boss Mark Robins labelled “terrible”.
He featured only once more for the Potters after that. For a young striker trying to build rhythm, it was a brutal interruption.
Yet his path to Southampton has hardly been straightforward from the start. A product of the West Ham academy, Mubama broke through with the Hammers and made 18 senior appearances, eight of them off the bench in the Premier League. He was trusted enough to be part of the squad that lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023, named among the substitutes on that night in Prague.
That European medal sits on his CV. What it doesn’t show is the minutes he still hasn’t had.
Manchester City polish, Southampton opportunity
Manchester City saw enough to move for him in the summer of 2024. Surrounded by some of the game’s sharpest finishers, Mubama used pre-season to remind everyone of his instincts in front of goal.
On City’s tour of Asia earlier this month, he scored against Inter Milan and the K-League All Stars, then added an assist in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday. Against elite opposition, he found space, found chances, and finished.
Now comes the real test: turning pre-season promise into Championship end product.
“With the way this team plays, when you've got players around you that have that much quality, you will be served,” Mubama told the Southampton website. “It's up to you whether you put the ball in the back of the net, and that's what I'm here to do.
“I've just come back from a pre-season where I've scored goals. I've been playing, I feel really fresh, I feel sharp, so I'm just really excited to get going.”
Those are the words of a forward who knows the service will come. At Southampton, it usually does. The question is whether he can be ruthless enough to turn it into promotion fuel.
Spors’ swift move
Inside the club, there was little hesitation once the door opened.
“As soon as we knew about Divin's availability we acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team, which will be vitally important this season,” said sporting director Johannes Spors.
Work ethic. Hunger. Two qualities managers and directors cling to in a long Championship campaign, where games pile up and squads are stretched. Mubama’s numbers at Stoke hint at a forward who runs, presses, and chases as much as he finishes.
The timing of the deal is no coincidence either. With Charles departing for a sizeable fee, Southampton have chosen to reinvest in firepower, banking on a young City striker to turn possession into points.
Mubama arrives fresh from Asia, sharp from pre-season, and carrying the expectations that come with swapping one title-chasing environment for another. Now he has a season to show whether those goals against Inter and Atletico were a glimpse of the future, or just a summer snapshot.
