Steven Nzonzi Returns to French Football with USL Dunkerque

Steven Nzonzi is back in French football. Back in Ligue 2. And back in a role he knows better than most: the experienced anchor asked to steady an ambitious side.

USL Dunkerque have confirmed the signing of the 37-year-old midfielder, who had been a free agent since leaving Stoke City in early July. It is the 11th professional club of a long, decorated career, but this move carries a different weight. This one feels like a return to his roots.

Nzonzi’s last campaign with Stoke in 2025-26 showed there is still plenty of football in those long legs. Thirty-one appearances, 17 of them starts, and a goal for the Potters underlined his durability and usefulness in the grind of league play. He was not a fading name clinging to the end of a contract; he was still part of the engine room.

Now Dunkerque are asking him to become the metronome of a much younger squad. The average age of the group is 24. Nzonzi arrives as the outlier, the 2018 World Cup winner with 20 caps for France, the player who has seen almost everything the game can throw at you.

For the club, the logic is clear. They have flirted with the top before, finishing fourth in Ligue 2 two years ago and eyeing promotion to Ligue 1. They know the margins at the top end of this division are thin. One moment of composure. One leader in the middle of the pitch. One player who can slow the game down when it races out of control.

That is exactly what Nzonzi has built his reputation on.

His return to France also closes a personal circle. Born in Colombes, in the Paris region, he left Ligue 2 as a promising youngster with Amiens SC back in the 2008-09 season. From there came the climb through England, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Qatar, and back to France with Stade Rennais FC between 2020 and 2021. Now, almost two decades after that first taste of the division, he steps back into it as the veteran.

Dunkerque are not signing the Nzonzi of Sevilla or Roma. They do not need that version. They need the reader of the game, the organiser, the quiet reference point for a dressing room that has not yet lived what he has lived.

Promotion is the word that hangs over this move. The club have been close. With Nzonzi patrolling midfield, they are betting that experience might finally push them over the line into Ligue 1.
