Strasbourg Names Hugo Oliveira as New Head Coach After Gary O'Neil's Departure
Strasbourg announced on Sunday that Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira will take charge after Gary O'Neil left the club last month in a surprise move.
The Englishman O'Neil departed from the Ligue 1 team to join Ipswich on June 26, just six months after starting his stint in France this past January.
The club has not revealed how long Oliveira's contract will run. The 47-year-old arrives from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Famalicao, marking his first full head coach role.
"It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project," Oliveira said in a club release. "I want to bring emotion, create memories and give the best of myself to help the club to develop."
Most of Oliveira's coaching experience has been as a goalkeeping coach. He has worked with the Portugal national team and English clubs including Everton and Fulham, often alongside Marco Silva.
He stepped up as Famalicao's head coach in December 2024, leading the club to a fifth-place finish in Portugal's top league last season — their highest since returning to the Primeira Liga six years ago.
O'Neil, before leaving, had taken Strasbourg from Alsace to the semi-finals of the Conference League and secured eighth place in Ligue 1 last season.
Strasbourg will kick off their new Ligue 1 season with an away match at Marseille during the weekend of August 21-23.
