The Stadium of Light gets its first taste of Premier League football this season on Sunday, as Sunderland welcome Fulham on matchday two. It already feels important.
Regis Le Bris’ side arrive bruised. Opening day brought a 2-1 defeat at Portman Road against newly promoted Ipswich Town, a result that cut straight through the optimism built over the summer. Sunderland showed flashes of what they can be – Nilson Angulo’s equaliser underlined their attacking threat – but familiar problems at the back resurfaced and late defensive lapses turned a solid away performance into a pointless one.
That’s what makes this home debut matter. Pre-season wins over Stade Rennais and RC Lens had suggested Sunderland were ready to step up a level. Now they have to prove that those August evenings weren’t a mirage.
Injuries, bans and big calls
Le Bris does not have a full deck to play with.
On the left flank, Sunderland are without one of their key weapons. Simon Adingra is out for around six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season, a blow that strips pace and direct running from their wide play just as the campaign starts to bite.
New signing Dayann Methalie also sits this one out. The defender serves a one-match suspension, carried over from yellow cards collected in France last season, delaying his Premier League bow.
There is fresh help on the way, though. Jules Ahoka is now fully registered following his move from Royal Antwerp and is expected to be involved, most likely from the bench. His presence at least gives Le Bris another option as he reshapes a back line that creaked at Portman Road.
The manager’s mood will be lifted further by the return of two defenders who missed chunks of pre-season. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off their fitness issues and are back in contention, both pressing hard for starting spots alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava. After last weekend’s late collapse, competition in those positions is no bad thing.

Le Bris is unlikely to rip everything up after one defeat, but the balance of his side will be watched closely.
A possible Sunderland XI: Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey.
That setup leans on the control of Granit Xhaka and the creativity of Enzo Le Fée, with Angulo again asked to provide the spark between the lines and Brian Brobbey leading the line. With Adingra missing, the responsibility on those central attacking players only grows.
