Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR for Fresh Start
Tariq Lamptey bets on himself again. This time at Loftus Road.
Queens Park Rangers have snapped up the right-back on a free transfer after his departure from Fiorentina, handing a fresh start to a player whose career has rarely followed the easy route.
A career that never stood still
At 25, Lamptey already carries the weight of several footballing lives. He came through Chelsea’s academy and burst into the Premier League with a fearless debut against Arsenal, then chose to leave the comfort of Stamford Bridge for regular football at Brighton. It was a bold call that paid off: more than 120 appearances for the Seagulls, a constant outlet on the flank, and a reputation as one of the league’s most dynamic full-backs when fit.
That momentum stalled in Italy. Lamptey joined Fiorentina in September 2025, a move that looked like a stylish fit for Serie A. Instead, a serious knee injury reduced his time there to just two appearances. The promise never had the chance to breathe.
Now comes the reset.
Resilience and a new stage
Lamptey arrives at QPR talking like a man who has been through the worst of it and refused to blink.
“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club’s website. “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”
It is not empty rhetoric. This is a player who changed international allegiance from England to Ghana, then went straight into a World Cup in 2022. He already has 11 senior caps for the Black Stars, having previously represented England at under-21 level. Every step has involved a decision, a risk, a leap.
QPR are banking on that mentality as much as his pace.
QPR’s pitch – and their ambition
Behind the scenes, this was not a quiet signing. Chief executive Christian Nourry made it clear that Lamptey had options.
“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” Nourry said. “His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club.”
That line matters. A player with Premier League experience, Serie A exposure and World Cup minutes choosing QPR over a stack of other offers is a statement about where the club believes it is heading.
The terms of Lamptey’s contract remain undisclosed, but the message does not. QPR want to be seen as a serious platform for players aiming high, not just a stopping point on the way down.
Countdown to kick-off
The Championship season will not wait for anyone’s recovery story. QPR open away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST), a fixture that will set the early tone for their campaign.
Lamptey says he is “not too far away” from full fitness. When he does step onto that right flank in blue and white hoops, the question will be simple: can his trademark surge down the touchline become the symbol of QPR’s own push for something bigger this season?
