TCU Falls to Texas 1-0 in Close Match at Garvey-Rosenthal
FORT WORTH – Under the lights at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, TCU threw everything it had at Texas. The 19th-ranked Horned Frogs walked away with nothing.
A single strike from Ava McDonald in the 68th minute decided it, handing Texas a 1-0 win on Sunday night and silencing a record-sized crowd that had come expecting a statement from the home side.
Geller stands tall, but Texas break through
For nearly 70 minutes, TCU lived on a knife’s edge and survived it thanks to goalkeeper Olivia Geller. The junior turned in eight saves on the night, a new season high and just one shy of her career best, and kept the Frogs level long after Texas had found its rhythm.
She was busy early. Texas carved out looks, but Geller’s positioning and reactions kept the Longhorns out and allowed TCU to grow into the game. The Frogs pieced together a few sharp moves of their own in the first half, the best of them ending at the feet of Grace Vest, whose effort on frame was handled.
TCU never quite found the final ball. The hosts reached halftime still deadlocked at 0-0, a fair reflection of a half where both teams threatened but neither truly seized control.
One moment, one finish
The second half opened with more intent from TCU. The Frogs registered five shots after the break and began to push higher, urged on by 2,326 fans — the program’s largest home crowd since October 27, 2022.
Then Texas landed the punch.
In the 68th minute, McDonald found the space she needed and drilled home what proved to be the winner, finally beating Geller and putting the Longhorns in front. After all the resistance, TCU trailed.
The response came late, and it came agonizingly close.
With five minutes to play, Kamdyn Fuller rose to meet a cross and snapped a header toward goal. The ball ricocheted dangerously, nearly bundled over the line by a Texas defender. It somehow stayed out, inches from an equalizer that would have rewritten the night.
From there, time bled away. TCU pushed, chased, and loaded the box, but the game-tying goal never arrived.
Milestone night, frustrating result
While the scoreline stung, the evening carried weight for the program. Head coach Eric Bell took charge of his 300th match at the helm of TCU, a milestone framed by one of the biggest atmospheres the stadium has seen.
Geller went the distance in goal, joined in the 90-minute club by Zoe Cuneio, Grace Coppinger, Evie Baker, Cameron Patton and Fuller. Bella Diorio led the Frogs with two shots, both on target, as TCU searched for a cutting edge that never quite materialized.
Off the bench, Eres Freifeld, Hannah Harms, Madison Taylor, Mackenzie Hilderman and Giovanna Costanzo all saw action as Bell tried to unlock Texas’ back line.
TCU drops to 3-2-1 with the loss, but now comes an 11-day pause — a rare breather in a packed calendar — before Big 12 play begins. The Frogs open conference action on September 17 in Stillwater against Oklahoma State.
A night of near-misses and one decisive moment is in the books. The real question now: how quickly can TCU turn frustration into fuel with the Big 12 season about to start?
