Thomas Partey Arrives in Riyadh for Al-Shabab Transfer

Thomas Partey has touched down in Riyadh, the next stop in a career that has taken him from Accra to London, Madrid and Villarreal – and now, almost certainly, to Al-Shabab.

The Black Stars deputy captain arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of a mandatory medical, a key hurdle before he signs what is expected to be a one-year deal with the Saudi Pro League side. If he passes, the contract is ready. So is the next chapter.

From Villarreal exit to Saudi switch

Partey, now 33, is on the market as a free agent after his one-year contract with Villarreal ran out this summer. The Spanish club used him regularly last season: 25 appearances in all competitions in the 2025/26 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.

It was a short spell but an important one. He proved he could still handle top-level football after leaving Arsenal, where he had been a central figure for several seasons. In North London, the Ghanaian midfielder racked up 130 appearances and scored nine goals before departing the Premier League in 2025 when his deal expired.

Now comes a different kind of challenge. A move to Al-Shabab keeps him in a competitive environment and extends a career that has already seen him operate at the highest level with Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Villarreal.

Reunion in Riyadh

There is a familiar face waiting for him in Riyadh.

Should the deal go through, Partey will reunite with Yannick Carrasco, his former teammate at Atletico Madrid. The Belgian winger has been at Al-Shabab for the past three seasons, one of the club’s marquee names in the Saudi Pro League.

That connection matters. It offers Partey an immediate on-pitch understanding and a dressing-room ally as he adjusts to a new league, a new culture and a growing football project.

What it means for Ghana

This is not just another transfer line in the gossip columns. For Ghana, it carries weight.

Partey remains a pillar of the national team. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he featured three times as the Black Stars battled their way to the Round of 32. He is still the deputy captain, still one of the first names on the team sheet when fit.

Ghana missed the last Africa Cup of Nations and cannot afford another absence. The 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign starts in September, and the technical team will be desperate for their senior players to arrive sharp, healthy and playing regular club football.

That is where Al-Shabab comes in. A successful spell in Riyadh could give Partey exactly what Ghana need from him: rhythm, fitness and leadership in a high-profile league that demands consistency.

His proposed move is more than a late-career payday. It could be the platform that keeps him central to both club and country over the next crucial two years.

Work behind the scenes

This next step has not come out of nowhere.

Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Partey had been working on his fitness in Turkey, putting in individual sessions as he waited for the right offer after becoming a free agent. Those images of him training hard were the clearest sign he was not ready to drift quietly out of the European spotlight.

Now the scene has shifted to Riyadh. The medical will tell its story. If all goes to plan, Thomas Partey will walk out in Al-Shabab colours soon – with Ghana watching closely, and 2027 AFCON qualifying looming on the horizon.
