Arsenal's Transfer Ambitions: Arteta Vows to Stay Active
Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal are far from finished in the transfer market, even as the Premier League champions prepare to raise the curtain on their title defence tonight.
The Gunners open the 2026/27 Premier League season at home to Coventry City, with Frank Lampard bringing his newly promoted side to a North London buzzing from last year’s triumph – and from another ambitious summer.
Champions still hunting reinforcements
Arsenal have already moved decisively. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived to add steel and craft in midfield. Christos Tzolis offers another direct, attacking option. Illan Meslier strengthens competition in goal.
On top of that, Ezri Konsa has completed a £51m switch from Aston Villa, with the England defender finalising his move to North London and an official announcement imminent.
Yet Arteta made it clear in his pre‑match press conference: the recruitment drive is not over.
"We are really active in the market, I think I mentioned that a few days ago. The ambition is to improve the squad," he said, underlining Arsenal’s intent ahead of the September 1 deadline.
The priority is clear. Arsenal want another forward, and several fringe players are expected to move on to balance the squad. But an issue at the back has sharpened the club’s focus.
Defensive concern after Saliba blow
Arteta did not hide the scale of the problem in defence, with a long-term injury to William Saliba – referred to as “Wilo” – forcing Arsenal back into the market.
"We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that's clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we're ready, we'll announce something."
The message is blunt: Arsenal know they are short and are working to fix it. Konsa’s arrival addresses part of that gap, but the manager’s words suggest more movement is expected before the window shuts.
New faces, new energy
If there is concern about numbers in defence, there is no doubt in Arteta’s mind about the impact of the signings already through the door.
"Yes, that's what the new signings bring: a new energy, something to prove in front of them as well, and obviously a competition," he said.
He highlighted the quality and personality of Guimaraes, Tzolis and Meslier, and the way they have raised standards from the first day of pre-season.
"When you talk about players of that quality and leadership, the same with Christos [Tzolis] or with Illan [Meslier], what they've done since day one, I think it lifts the level of everybody."
A title to defend, a squad still evolving, a market still moving. Arsenal walk out against Coventry tonight knowing the season starts now – but their summer business is very much still in play.
