The Bollywood star, who had been named in Mumbai FC’s squad for the 2026 Durand Cup, confirmed on Sunday that he will not travel to Shillong and will not feature in the club’s upcoming group-stage clash.

The announcement ends a week of growing buzz after his inclusion in the squad on July 28 hinted at a competitive debut. Co-owner Zoheb Amrani had even suggested Shroff could play at least one group game in Shillong, raising the prospect of a rare crossover: a mainstream film star stepping into professional football.

That storyline has been cut short by timing.

In a video released on Mumbai FC’s official Instagram account, Shroff addressed the situation head-on, saying a last-minute professional commitment had forced him to pull out of the trip. He confirmed he will miss the match against Nongkseh SS & CC and will not be part of the Durand Cup campaign in Shillong.

The 36-year-old’s disappointment is rooted in more than celebrity curiosity. Shroff has been tied to Mumbai FC since the club’s launch in 2024, not as a ceremonial face but as a regular presence on the pitch. He has turned out for the side in the Mumbai District League, trained with the squad, and steadily nurtured a late-blooming ambition to test himself in a professional competition.

That ambition will have to wait.

Shroff stressed that his commitment to the club remains, even if he cannot pull on the shirt in Shillong. He spoke of backing the squad from the sidelines and highlighted the “young talent” at Mumbai FC, voicing his belief that, with proper backing and opportunity, Indian football “can do wonders”.

For Mumbai FC, his absence removes an intriguing subplot from their Durand Cup journey but not the core task. The squad travels to Shillong without the added glare of a film star on the team sheet, chasing points rather than headlines.

For Shroff, the script has changed. The question now is not whether he can handle the intensity of a Durand Cup tie, but when – or if – that long-awaited professional debut will finally arrive.
