Tom Heaton Expected to Sign New Manchester United Contract

Manchester United are moving to keep one of their most trusted dressing-room voices, with Tom Heaton expected to sign a new one-year contract at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, whose deal was due to expire this summer, is understood to have agreed terms on an extension that will keep him at the club for another 12 months. It is a quiet move in a noisy summer, but one that fits the mood of a squad being reshaped for a return to the Champions League and a new era under Michael Carrick.

Veteran presence stays put

Heaton rejoined United in the summer of 2021, returning to the club where he came through the academy. On paper, his impact has been minimal: just three senior appearances since that move. Inside the training ground, it has been anything but.

Coaches and players have long valued his standards, his voice and his professionalism around the camp. Casemiro, who will leave when his own contract expires at the end of the season, has publicly highlighted Heaton’s influence, describing how the goalkeeper drives the intensity in training and lifts the dressing room despite rarely featuring on matchdays.

“He pushes the training, he pushes in the game, of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time,” Casemiro said on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, stressing how every squad “needs this guy”.

United clearly agree. Heaton signed a one-year extension last summer and is now poised to repeat the trick, anchoring the goalkeeping department with experience and continuity while others come and go.

Casemiro exits as midfield reshaped

While Heaton stays, Casemiro is heading for the exit. The Brazilian midfielder, once a marquee arrival, is not expected to sign fresh terms and will depart when his contract runs down.

His exit is part of a broader overhaul in midfield. United have already struck a deal to bring in Atalanta’s Ederson, agreeing a £38.8million package that comprises a £35m initial fee plus £3.8m in add-ons. The Brazilian’s arrival signals a push for energy and dynamism in the middle of the pitch as the club prepares for the demands of European football again.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes remains on the radar as another midfield target, with United keen to add further legs and versatility in that area. The recruitment drive is expected to be busy and, at times, ruthless.

Carrick’s first summer in charge

All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Carrick’s first pre-season as permanent manager. The former United midfielder steps into the role with the club back in the Champions League and under pressure to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.

Big-money signings like Ederson will draw the headlines. Speculation around further arrivals will dominate the debate. Yet inside the club, decisions like extending Heaton’s deal matter just as much. They speak to culture, to standards, to what Carrick wants his dressing room to look and feel like.

United’s summer will be defined by who comes in and who leaves. But in keeping Tom Heaton for another year, they are also choosing to hold on to a voice that has helped bind the group together.

As the rebuild gathers pace and the Champions League anthem looms, the question now is simple: how quickly can Carrick turn these careful pieces of planning into a side that looks like Manchester United again?
