Tommy Coyle to Return to Boxing Ring for Charity Fight
Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle is preparing to step back into the ring after more than five years away. The fight will serve a charitable cause, aiming to raise funds for boxing clubs in Hull and Liverpool.
The 37-year-old from Hull will face off against his old rival Derry Mathews, with their upcoming bout scheduled for December 11. The exact venue in Hull has yet to be announced.
A Familiar Rivalry Rekindled
Coyle and Mathews first clashed in 2013 at Craven Park in Hull, battling for the Commonwealth title. Mathews secured victory by knocking Coyle out in the 10th round.
"Who knows what’s going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let’s just see if I can turn back the clock," Coyle said. "We’re two old pros that are friends and we’re going to go at it and try to create some memories."
Motivation Amid Personal Loss
Reflecting on his comeback, Coyle opened up about the passing of his father, Chris, in 2022. His father had been a significant influence throughout his boxing career.
"It will be the first fight my dad’s not seen," Coyle shared. "It’s sad, but I can’t not do things just because he’s not around anymore. He isn’t coming back and I’ve had to learn to come to terms with that. I’ve really struggled with him not being around, he was my best friend."
The upcoming fight offers Coyle a focus and a challenge during a difficult time.
"For the next 12 weeks, it will give me something to focus on, something to chase, and something to occupy my mind. If I say I’m doing something, I always do it."
Supporting Boxing Communities
Coyle emphasized the positive impact the event will have beyond the ring.
"Boxing fans will be the winners in this fight as well as the clubs we’re raising money for."
