Tommy Marques: Barcelona Talent on the Market Amid Rodri Push
Barcelona’s chase of one Spanish midfielder is about to cost them another.
While the Catalan club work to prise Rodri away from Manchester City this summer, the Premier League champions have quietly moved in on one of Barça’s own: 19-year-old midfielder Tommy Marques.
This is no loose enquiry. Talks between Barcelona and Tommy are already advanced over a permanent exit before the window shuts, with a buyback clause built in so the club can keep a hand on the wheel of his future. They know what they’ve got. They just don’t have room for it right now.
City’s blueprint for Tommy
Manchester City’s interest comes with a clear plan, not a speculative bid.
The idea on the table is straightforward: sign Tommy now, then immediately send him on loan to Girona. Regular top-flight minutes, a defined role, and a familiar structure within the City Football Group. It’s a route several young players have already taken on their way towards the Etihad.
For City, Tommy would be another carefully chosen project – developed in La Masia, polished in La Liga, and monitored closely from Manchester. For the player, it’s a fast track to senior football that Barcelona simply cannot guarantee this season.
Competition from Portugal and Germany
City, though, are not alone at the door.
Braga are pushing hardest at this stage, driven by head coach Carlos Vicens. The Spaniard knows the City system from the inside after his time in their academy setup and sees Tommy as an ideal fit for his project in Portugal. That connection gives Braga credibility in the race, even if they cannot compete with City’s financial muscle.
Borussia Dortmund have also stepped in, keeping alive a productive line between the German club and Barcelona. Recent business, including Karim Adeyemi’s move to Catalonia, has only strengthened that relationship. Dortmund’s track record with young talent needs no introduction, and the prospect of developing in the Bundesliga offers a very different, but equally attractive, path.

Rodri changes everything
The turning point in Tommy’s situation is simple: Rodri.
Barcelona have decided to go all-in on signing the Spanish international this summer. That push has had an immediate knock-on effect inside the squad. Earlier in the window, Tommy was expected to stay with the first team and step into the space left by Marc Casado, who is on track to be sold.
That plan is now dead.
Rodri’s expected arrival will pack an already crowded midfield even tighter. Minutes for a 19-year-old, no matter how talented, would be scarce. Training with the first team sounds glamorous; playing once a month does not develop a career. The logic is brutal but clear: for Tommy to grow, he has to go.
Barça sell, but don’t let go
Barcelona’s stance reflects that tension.
They are prepared to sanction a permanent sale, but not a clean break. The preferred formula is a transfer with a buyback clause and a sell-on percentage – a model they have leaned on repeatedly with La Masia graduates in recent years.
It’s a compromise between financial need, sporting reality, and faith in the academy. Tommy gets the platform he needs. The buying club gets a serious talent. Barcelona keep a door open in case he becomes the player many inside the club believe he can be.
Rodri’s arrival will not only define the shape of Barcelona’s midfield for the coming seasons; it will also trigger departures. On current trajectory, Tommy Marques looks destined to be the first name sacrificed to make room for a superstar.
The question now is not whether he leaves, but which project he chooses for the next chapter of his career.
