Tottenham's Bold Move for Sandro Tonali

Tottenham are moving with the urgency of a club that has just stared over the edge.

Days after scraping Premier League survival with a nervy 1-0 win over Everton, Spurs are now deep into talks over what would be a transformative signing: Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, on a six-year deal, with a contract package worth around £72m, according to reports.

This is not a routine rebuild. It is a reaction to a near-miss.

From relegation scare to statement move

Tottenham finished the season clinging to safety, just two points clear of 18th-placed West Ham, who dropped into the Championship. That escape has jolted the club into action.

Four new faces are already through the door. Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have arrived on free transfers from Burnley, Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, while Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has joined in a £52m deal. It is a solid start, a spine being rebuilt piece by piece.

But the big play is in midfield.

Tottenham have identified Tonali as their primary target in the centre of the pitch, and the pursuit has accelerated rapidly over the past week.

Tonali wants Spurs – and Spurs know it

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on Friday that Tonali has informed Newcastle he wants the move to north London this summer. The Italy international is understood to be ready to accept Tottenham’s proposal, a package that would more than double his current salary at St James’ Park.

Newcastle, though, are holding firm publicly. Their asking price remains around the £100m mark for the 24-year-old, and that is the hurdle Spurs now have to clear.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has claimed that Tottenham and Tonali have already reached a “total agreement” over personal terms on a contract running until 2032, with Spurs now “confident” of striking a deal with Newcastle. Schira also noted that two other Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, but it is Tottenham who are pushing hardest.

The pressure is on Newcastle’s side of the table now. They have a player who wants the move and a club ready to pay him like a cornerstone.

Romano: “Deal on. Tottenham – Tonali.”

Fabrizio Romano has been equally clear about who leads this race. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist nailed his colours to the Spurs mast.

“I stand by my news. Last week, out of nowhere, exclusive news – Sandro Tonali – Tottenham full stop,” he said, stressing that he is not currently mentioning Manchester City or any other club in connection with the midfielder.

“Tottenham are working on the deal to sign Sandro Tonali, and that remains the case. Deal on. Tottenham – Tonali.”

Romano’s insistence matches the mood around the club: this is not a speculative enquiry, it is an active, advanced pursuit.

A different kind of Tottenham window

For years, Tottenham have been accused of drifting through transfer windows, reacting late, moving cautiously, often watching key targets go elsewhere. This summer looks and feels different.

They have already added experience and depth in goal, defence and at left-back. Now they are closing in on a midfielder of genuine European pedigree, a player capable of dictating tempo and dragging a team up the pitch.

Survival was the minimum. The response has been anything but. If Spurs land Tonali on top of their early business, this stops being just a rescue job and starts to look like the foundation of a new era.

The question now is simple: having pulled themselves back from the brink, how bold are Tottenham prepared to be to make sure they never go that close again?
