Tottenham Dominates Charlton 5-1 as Savio Shines on Debut
Tottenham Hotspur ripped into Charlton Athletic with a ruthless 5-1 win, shaking off their recent Premier League stumble and strolling into the next round.
Charlton’s night fell apart almost immediately. Within 15 bruising minutes, defenders Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio were both forced off injured, tearing big holes in their back line and their game plan. From that point, it always felt like survival rather than contest.
Tottenham smelled weakness.
Tiernan Brooks briefly held the visitors together, denying Archie Gray with a sharp stop, but the pressure kept building. It finally broke on 41 minutes. Mikey Moore drove at goal and hammered his finish straight through Brooks’ hands to open the scoring.
Charlton barely had time to regroup. Before half-time, Dominic Solanke doubled the lead, finishing smartly to leave the Championship side staring at a long, unforgiving second half.
Spurs never eased off.
Early in the second period, Kevin Danso made an instant impact. On the pitch and on the scoresheet with his first touch, he met a Mateus Fernandes free-kick with a firm header to make it 3-0. From there, it was dominance. Charlton chased shadows, Tottenham played with freedom.
And then came the moment the home crowd had been waiting for.
Savio stepped off the bench in the 71st minute and needed just 11 minutes to light up his debut. Cutting inside with purpose, the winger drilled a precise low strike into the bottom corner for Tottenham’s fourth. The stadium erupted; this was exactly the kind of entrance fans dream about.
He wasn’t done.
Three minutes later, Savio twisted and turned inside the penalty area, causing chaos. His scruffy effort took a deflection off Ben Davies and flew in for the fifth. It was messy, but it summed up Charlton’s night: overwhelmed, outmuscled, and out of answers.
Charlton did at least leave with something to show for their effort. In the 87th minute, defender Lloyd Jones rose highest from a corner and headed in a consolation goal. It barely muted the home celebrations, but it spared the visitors a whitewash.
For Roberto De Zerbi, this was exactly the response he needed. After a disjointed start to their domestic campaign, his side looked sharp, aggressive and unforgiving. Five goals, a commanding performance, and a debut to remember for Savio – the mood around Tottenham suddenly feels very different.
Everton cruise, Newcastle edge thriller
At Deepdale, Everton enjoyed a far more straightforward evening, brushing aside Preston North End 4-0. Thierno Barry stole the headlines with a brilliant hat-trick, while Brennan Johnson grabbed his first goal for the club to round off the scoring.
The margin allowed David Moyes to ease off late on, resting several key players and still cruising to the finish line without a hint of jeopardy.
Up north, Newcastle United were pushed far harder but still found a way to win, edging West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in a lively contest. Bazoumana Toure struck, and Harvey Barnes added a decisive double for the hosts, who had to dig deep to hold off a spirited fightback.
Isaac Price kept West Brom in it with a well-taken free-kick, and a late penalty cranked up the tension. Newcastle’s lead looked fragile, but goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen produced a crucial diving save from a Jayson Molumby free-kick to lock in the result.
On a night of big scorelines and bigger statements, it was Tottenham’s five-goal surge and Savio’s electric debut that hinted most loudly at what might still be possible this season.
