Tottenham Targets Cody Gakpo for Bold Attack Reshuffle
Tottenham are lining up one of the window’s boldest attacking reshuffles – and Cody Gakpo has suddenly moved to the front of the queue.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have already torn into this summer with the kind of intent that usually belongs to clubs trying to change their entire trajectory in one window. Around £237m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson added on free transfers to plug gaps from back to front.
The spine has been rebuilt. Now comes the fun part: the wings.
Savinho first, Gakpo next?
Tottenham’s main play on the right remains Savinho. The Brazilian has told Manchester City he wants out and has given the nod to Spurs, clearing the biggest hurdle in any major deal: the player’s will.
Talks between the clubs have been active for some time, with the expectation that a package of around £60m will get it done. It’s the sort of fee that signals more than just squad padding. Savinho would arrive as a starter, a statement, a winger to grow with Postecoglou’s high-tempo, front-foot football.
But Tottenham’s plan was always bigger than one wide man.
They had been on the verge of making a concrete move for Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi. TEAMtalk revealed Spurs were less than 24 hours from submitting an opening bid when the 18-year-old suffered a fractured metatarsal. Surgery followed, along with a three-to-four month layoff. Any transfer this summer is off the table.
The door that slammed shut on Kroupi has opened for Gakpo.
Spurs move to the front for Gakpo
Cody Gakpo’s name has been bubbling under the surface of the window. Fabrizio Romano recently flagged him as one to watch, specifically linking him to Spurs and noting their admiration for the Liverpool forward.
That interest now has sharper edges. Journalist Paul O’Keefe reported on Saturday that Gakpo is “a leading contender” as Tottenham push to reinforce their attack. It’s a clear sign that talks inside the club have moved beyond the brainstorming stage and into targeted pursuit.
Gakpo, 27, operates primarily off the left, but his time at Liverpool has shown he can slot through the middle as a central striker when needed. For a manager like Postecoglou, who prizes fluidity and rotation in the front line, that dual role is gold.
It’s exactly the kind of flexibility Spurs were seeking in Kroupi – someone who can stretch the pitch from wide but also step inside and lead the line. Gakpo offers that, with the added bonus of Premier League experience and a proven record at international level with the Netherlands.
Liverpool set a premium price
There is, of course, the matter of cost.
Liverpool are not treating this as a bargain-bin sale. According to Anfield Watch, the club have put a £72m price tag on Gakpo, using Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as the benchmark for their valuation.
“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” they reported, adding that Gordon’s fee has effectively set the going rate for a wide forward of Gakpo’s age and profile.
For Tottenham, that figure would push their summer outlay into truly eye-watering territory. Yet the pattern of this window suggests they are prepared to pay for players they believe fit the system and the project, rather than stockpiling for the sake of it.
The equation is simple: Savinho on the right for around £60m, Gakpo on the left for £72m. A double swoop that would reshape Spurs’ attack in one hit.
The question now is whether Tottenham are ready to cross that financial line – and whether Liverpool are genuinely prepared to cash in on a versatile forward entering his peak years.
