Thompson lit up the UEFA Youth League last season, scoring seven times and regularly tormenting full-backs from the left for Tottenham’s under-21s. Inside the academy, he was viewed as one of the next in line.

United have stepped into that gap, agreeing an initial £4m fee with Spurs, with a further £4m tied to performance-related add-ons. A sell-on clause believed to be between 15 and 20 per cent has been written into the agreement, along with matching rights that could give Spurs the chance to bring him back if he explodes at Old Trafford. Tottenham are letting him go, not quite letting him out of sight.
For Thompson, this is more than a football decision. Personal family circumstances have weighed heavily. After the unexpected death of his father last November, his family expressed a desire to relocate to the Manchester area, a factor that helped push the move over the line.
United, who have increasingly turned towards high-upside youth signings, wasted little time in making the transfer feel like a statement of intent. "Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future," the club said in a statement.
The next step is his: turning youth promise and raw numbers into something that counts under the Old Trafford lights.
