UEFA Champions League 2026-27 Overview

The UEFA Champions League returns with its 2026-27 season, where Paris Saint-Germain aims for a third straight title under coach Luis Enrique. Alongside PSG, powerhouse clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, and the returning Manchester United will compete. Newcomers Viking FK and Sabah join the fray as well.

The competition features 36 teams in the league phase, each facing eight distinct opponents—half of those games at home, the rest away.

Australian Players and Their Clubs

Nestory Irankunda could experience big European nights with Sporting CP, drawn alongside Barcelona, Manchester United, and Manchester City. Sporting will host Barcelona at Estadio Jose Alvalade, and matches against Manchester United, Galatasaray, and LASK will also take place in Lisbon. Away games include trips to Manchester City, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Lens.

Jordan Bos of Feyenoord faces an interesting schedule with visits to Barcelona, Real Betis, Galatasaray, and Viking FK. Home games will see Inter Milan, Porto, RB Leipzig, and Como visiting De Kuip. The clash with Viking FK means Bos may face Socceroos teammates Gianni Stensness and Nick D’Agostino, assuming he recovers from his World Cup injury.

Viking FK, making their Champions League debut, feature Socceroos Gianni Stensness and Nick D’Agostino. They host Bayern Munich in Stavanger and welcome PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, and Azerbaijani champions Sabah. Away fixtures include Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa, Napoli, and Stuttgart.

Antonio Arena, Australian-born Italy youth international, is part of Roma's squad this season.

Champions League Format

The tournament has changed since 2024, now featuring a 36-team league phase rather than traditional groups. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents—four home, four away. All teams are ranked in one table, earning three points for a win and one for a draw.

The top eight teams after this phase qualify directly for the Round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter two-legged playoffs for the remaining knockout spots. Those below 24th are eliminated from European play.
