United’s grand European return was meant to be all joy. Four goals, a clean sheet, Old Trafford under the lights. Instead, the image that lingered was their captain limping into the night.
Big win, bigger worry
United brushed aside Sabah FK 4-0, a ruthless, confident performance that finally looked like a team settling into its stride. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes all got on the scoresheet as the hosts flexed their attacking depth against the Azerbaijani side.

Carrick keeps eyes on the bigger picture
Michael Carrick, though, refused to let the night be defined by that late scare. He leaned hard into the performance, the control, the aggression.
“We’re always pushing for more,” he said afterwards. “Results-wise, it hasn’t been the start we wanted. We wanted to have more points in the league but performance-wise there’s a lot of things in there that we were looking for and we’ve been pleased with. And there’s certainly things to improve, you know. I think a clean sheet tonight was important for us.”
The message was clear: this wasn’t a hollow win over modest opposition. It was a step in a process he believes is starting to take shape.
At the back, United looked far more secure than they have in recent months. Sabah offered moments of threat, but the home side’s defensive structure held, with Martinez capping his display with a goal. Carrick pointed to that resilience as a cornerstone for what lies ahead.
“There’s certainly things to improve, you know. I think a clean sheet tonight was important for us,” he repeated, underlining the point. “I think collectively as a team we’ve done a lot of good things, and that’s why we’re kind of excited about what the season brings, and not game-to-game so much of getting too carried away. We want to keep progressing through the season, we want to keep pushing.
“There’s slightly different things happening in the team now that we probably didn’t have last season, in a good way, that we’re trying to get out of the players, and they’re showing that in a good way, so it’s really encouraging for me.”
The tactical tweaks he hinted at were visible: a more compact shape off the ball, quicker transitions, and a front line that looked hungry rather than hesitant.
Derby looming, nerves tightening
All of that now feeds into a huge weekend. Old Trafford hosts a derby that already feels like a fork in the road.
United have taken just four points from their first three league games. It is not disastrous, but it is not where they expected to be. Against local rivals, with “must win” starting to creep into the conversation, every detail matters. Especially the fitness of Bruno Fernandes.
The one sliver of optimism for United is that he showed no obvious signs of discomfort during the match itself and stayed on until the final whistle. That offers hope this is a minor knock, not a turning point in their season.
If he does miss out, though, the creative load will shift. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans, both impressive in the Champions League tie, would be asked to shoulder far more responsibility between the lines, tasked with supplying the same spark and authority Fernandes provides almost by default.
United finally produced a performance that looked like a platform. The question now is whether their captain will be fit enough to stand on it when the derby kicks off.
