Arsenal’s most ambitious summer gamble has just been called dead. Vinicius Jr is staying at Real Madrid.
The Brazil international has agreed terms on a new, improved contract at the Bernabéu after fresh talks with the Spanish giants on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. That decision ends Arsenal’s quiet but serious pursuit of the 26-year-old, who had been identified as a marquee attacking target if his future in Madrid cracked open.
It never did.
A contract that reflects his status
Vinicius Jr’s camp had been pushing hard. The forward was understood to be seeking around €30 million per year, along with an upgrade on his image-rights arrangement. His current deal, due to expire next summer, is worth €17.5m annually — a figure that had long since fallen out of step with his importance to Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Reports in Spain indicate both parties have landed on a compromise in the region of €25m a year. A salary befitting a player who has grown into one of Real Madrid’s reference points in attack and a central figure in their long-term project.
The Athletic add that Vinicius Jr had been open to the idea of joining Arsenal if talks with Madrid collapsed. For a brief window, the possibility existed: a Premier League giant with money to spend, a coach obsessed with tactical detail, and a squad on the rise. Arsenal were prepared to move decisively if the stalemate dragged on.
The stalemate never came. Madrid moved, the numbers rose, and the door closed.
Arsenal pivot to Plan B in attack
Inside Arsenal, the message is already clear: move on.
The club have shifted away from the Vinicius Jr pursuit and are now working through a list of alternative attacking options. The Daily Mail report that the Gunners have been tracking several forwards while simultaneously trying to tempt the Real Madrid star. That charm offensive is now redundant.
Mikel Arteta still wants more firepower. A versatile left-sided forward remains the priority before the transfer window shuts, someone who can both stretch the pitch and contribute goals in a front line that continues to lean heavily on Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
The midfield is almost in place. Bruno Guimaraes is set to be confirmed as Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer, adding control, aggression and creativity in the centre of the pitch. Once that deal is wrapped up, attention at London Colney will turn fully and ruthlessly to the attack.
Vinicius Jr will not be the face of that next step. Arsenal now have to decide who will be.
