Wales Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA Presidency Amid Controversy

As the 2027 FIFA presidential election approaches, the future of Gianni Infantino as the organisation’s leader is uncertain. Wales has become the first nation to publicly withdraw backing for his re-election bid.

Infantino, who has led FIFA since February 2016, recently faced backlash after FIFA abandoned a plan to allow minority investments in a new commercial subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This entity was intended to manage commercial rights for upcoming tournaments but was widely opposed by football associations around the world.

Widespread Opposition to FIFA Forward Enterprise Proposal

The proposal sparked resistance especially from European football bodies like UEFA and the Football Association (FA), who rejected it collectively. Earlier in the week, all 55 European member associations agreed on boycotting FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups, over this issue.

Infantino said, "The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to strengthen FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially where support is most needed. We would only proceed if a majority of FIFA Members were supportive." He added, "After listening carefully, it became clear the project caused divisions not in the interest of our objectives. The proposal will not move forward."

Though this cancellation was seen as the right move by many, it did little to protect Infantino’s standing. Several football associations voiced concerns about his leadership.

Calls for Leadership Review Grow Louder

Besides Wales, other national associations have expressed doubts. The Dutch KNVB stated, "The way this process unfolded caused a fundamental breach of trust in President Infantino’s leadership. We no longer have confidence in him." Norway’s FA president, Lise Klaveness, welcomed the withdrawal but urged for a cultural shift within FIFA away from fear and political gamesmanship.

The German FA president, Bernd Neuendorf, criticised Infantino’s handling as "unilateral, opaque, and ultimately irresponsible towards football’s best interests." UEFA also declared it had lost confidence in the current FIFA leadership.

Details on the Upcoming Election

The next FIFA Congress will be held on March 18 in Rabat, Morocco. All 211 FIFA member associations will cast a single vote to elect the president for the 2027-2031 term.
