West Ham Signs Joel Piroe on Loan from Leeds United

West Ham have moved to reshape their attack with the capture of Joel Piroe from Leeds United on a season-long loan, tied to an obligation to buy in the summer of 2027.

The 27-year-old arrives with a fearsome Championship record behind him. Across four seasons in the second tier, first with Swansea City and then Leeds, Piroe struck 73 league goals. At Elland Road he became the focal point of Daniel Farke’s promotion push, finishing as Leeds’ top scorer in the 2024-25 campaign as they powered to the title.

The step up was brutal. Last season in the Premier League, Piroe drew a blank in front of goal, failing to score in 16 appearances. Now he gets a fresh start in claret and blue.

"I think it's a good opportunity for me to show what I've learned and how I've grown as a football player over the years," Piroe told West Ham’s website, laying out his intent as he crosses London.

Born in the Netherlands but now a Suriname international, Piroe came through at PSV Eindhoven and sharpened his game during a loan spell at Sparta Rotterdam. His move to England unlocked his scoring touch, turning him into one of the Championship’s most reliable finishers.

West Ham have kept the finer details under wraps. The club have not disclosed the agreed fee attached to the 2027 obligation to buy, nor the length of the contract Piroe is expected to sign once the deal becomes permanent.

What is clear is the scale of their rebuild. Piroe becomes West Ham’s fifth permanent incoming of the summer window, following Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, Israel winger Manor Solomon and Belgium midfielder Arne Engels.

A new spine is taking shape in east London. Now Piroe has to prove he belongs at the sharp end of the Premier League, not just the division below.
