Despite being linked with several top-flight English clubs over the years, Victor Osimhen has never completed a transfer to the Premier League. Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole, who knows the game well and has been closely following the story, shared his thoughts with GOAL on why a deal that seems logical for many teams in England has not materialized.
Osimhen’s European Journey
Osimhen began his European career at Wolfsburg, but it was during a loan at Charleroi in Belgium that he first made a significant impression. He then spent the 2019-20 season with Lille in France before earning a high-profile transfer to Napoli in Italy.
At Napoli, Osimhen tasted Serie A glory and scored 31 goals during the 2022-23 season. His performances attracted interest from major Premier League sides like Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Currently, he is excelling in Turkey with Galatasaray, boasting 65 goals in 78 appearances.
Would Osimhen Fit the Premier League?
The 27-year-old forward possesses pace, strength, and clinical finishing—qualities highly valued in England’s top league. When asked about Osimhen’s suitability for the Premier League, Andy Cole, winner of the 1999 Treble, said:
“He does. He scores goals. He scored goals in Italy and he’s scoring goals in Turkey as well. But, you know, it depends. There are many different factors in signing a player from another country. It’s not just about salary or transfer fees. Many things come into play. If he does come to the Premier League, which I think he would do very well, you never know which club he’ll join.”
Calls for Manchester United to Sign Osimhen
Several former United players have urged the club to pursue Osimhen. Patrice Evra told GOAL recently:
“A striker, someone who scores goals. That’s what I’m looking at. That’s why for me, Osimhen is the best. He’s a perfect example.”
Louis Saha, ex-France international and fellow goalscorer, praised Osimhen’s character and achievements:
“I really like Victor Osimhen. He’s definitely got the character and quality. He has good European pedigree: success in France, a champion in Italy with Napoli, and brilliant form in Turkey with Galatasaray—a move he probably didn’t want, to be honest. He’s scored goals at every level, has Champions League experience, and has the personality this United squad needs.
I think he would be a transformational signing for Manchester United. Considering the pressure he faced at Napoli, leading them to their first title in 33 years, he’s the perfect man to lead United’s attack. I’d love to see the club make a move for him; he’s exactly what we need.”
Will Other Premier League Clubs Make a Move?
Despite such endorsements, Manchester United have shifted focus elsewhere, currently relying on Benjamin Sesko as their main striker. Osimhen’s potential return to Premier League discussions may happen in future windows, with reigning champions Arsenal possibly reconsidering him as a proven goal scorer.
