Xabi Alonso's Chelsea Tour Faces Setback with Key Absentees
Xabi Alonso has not even taken charge of a competitive Chelsea fixture, yet the realities of elite management have already bitten. His first pre-season tour as Blues head coach will go ahead without two of his summer recruits and several headline names, stripping back the options available as he tries to stamp his identity on a reshaped squad.
New faces, but not all on the plane
Chelsea have confirmed a 27-man travelling group for their preparatory tour of Australia and Asia, with the camp beginning in Sydney. Among those on board is defender Marco Palestra, the club’s latest signing from Atalanta for £43 million, a move that underlines both Chelsea’s spending power and their determination to refresh the back line.
Yet two other new arrivals will not be stepping onto the plane.
Emanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, both officially tied to the club during this summer window, have been left out of the touring party. Chelsea had struck agreements with Strasbourg for Emegha and Sporting Lisbon for Quenda before the window fully opened, but the pair only joined up with the squad properly in recent weeks. Their integration will now be delayed.
Emegha injured, questions over Quenda
Emegha’s absence at least has a clear explanation. According to British newspaper The Sun, the 23-year-old Dutch striker suffered a hamstring injury during a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Bromley, a game Chelsea won 3-0.
He even scored in that match. João Pedro, Jimmy-Jay Gittens and Emegha were on the scoresheet, a promising early sign for the forward before his momentum was abruptly checked by the muscle problem that followed.
Quenda’s situation is far less transparent. The 19-year-old Portugal right winger has simply not been included in the touring squad, with no official reason disclosed for his omission. For a teenager hoping to impress a new manager and adapt to a new country, missing valuable pre-season minutes is a significant blow.
Chelsea have not ruled out either player featuring at some stage. There is an expectation that, should Emegha’s recovery progress well and Quenda’s circumstances clear up, both could yet join Alonso’s group later in the tour. For now, though, the new manager will start work without them.
World Cup toll leaves Alonso short of stars
Alonso’s options are further thinned by the after-effects of the World Cup. Several key figures who went deep into the tournament have been granted extended rest and will not be involved in the early stages of pre-season.
Top of that list is Morgan Rogers, Chelsea’s eye-catching £117 million signing from Aston Villa. The versatile forward, one of the marquee additions of the summer, is being carefully managed after a long campaign that culminated in a demanding World Cup run with England.
Club captain Reece James is in the same position. After a gruelling season and international duty, he too is resting before rejoining the squad to build towards the new campaign.
Their absence strips Chelsea of leadership and star quality on tour, but also opens the door for younger players and fringe figures to stake a claim in front of Alonso and his staff.
Early tests for a new regime
The 3-0 win over Bromley, sealed by goals from João Pedro, Gittens and Emegha, offered a first glimpse of what Alonso might try to build. It also delivered his first setback in the form of Emegha’s injury.
Pre-season is supposed to be the manager’s laboratory: a chance to experiment, to drill ideas, to see how new signings blend with the existing core. Instead, Alonso will spend the opening weeks of his Chelsea tenure juggling absences, easing World Cup returnees back into the fold and waiting on medical updates.
The tour will still go on. The work will still get done. The question is how much of Alonso’s Chelsea we will truly see before the serious football starts.
