Xavi Endorses Lamine Yamal for Ballon d'Or, Reflects on Barcelona Legacy and Dutch Debut
Xavi Hernandez, now managing the Netherlands national team, has expressed strong belief that Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal is destined to win the Ballon d'Or this year. Before his debut match against Germany, Xavi spoke at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist, calling the 19-year-old forward a talent of his generation.
Although acknowledging Lionel Messi’s impressive World Cup performance, Xavi highlighted that Spain’s World Cup winners deserve major recognition too. He showed full confidence that Yamal will rise to dominate global football soon.
Legacy at Barcelona: Developing Homegrown Talent
Xavi took pride in nurturing players like Yamal, Fermin Lopez, and Pau Cubarsi into world-class champions during tough financial times for the Catalan club. The 46-year-old emphasized the importance of stabilizing Barcelona through one of its hardest periods over the last quarter-century.
"We did our bit to help this generation achieve things," Xavi said. "If we contributed to the club’s recovery during what was practically its worst period, we're already happy. Lamine is special, he’s different, he’s 19 and he’ll undoubtedly win it, but this would be a good year for him to win it now."
He also praised current coach Hansi Flick for maintaining Barcelona’s strong progress.

Turning to his new role with the Dutch national team, Xavi highlighted how Dutch football shares tactical roots with Barcelona's positional style. Settling into the KNVB complex has gone smoothly, with staff and players commuting by bike to daily sessions.
"We have many connections with this country at a footballing level," Xavi remarked. "People want to see attacking football, they want positional play — the same philosophy we have in Barcelona. I feel this connection."

Xavi’s first game as Netherlands manager will be a high-profile UEFA Nations League match against Jurgen Klopp’s Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. Even with key players like Frenkie de Jong and Xavi Simons sidelined by injury, Xavi trusts his squad to compete strongly.
