Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Swimming Pool Incident

Yael Trepy, the young French forward on Cagliari’s books, is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool, the Serie A club has confirmed.

The 20-year-old, who broke into the first team last season, is being treated in hospital in northern Sardinia. Cagliari said in a short, sober statement that Trepy “is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari”, adding that the club is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”.

The club has appealed for calm and discretion at a delicate moment. “The club asks for privacy to be respected and will provide further updates as soon as possible,” the statement continued, without going into how the incident unfolded.

Italian media reports say Trepy was involved in a near-drowning on Sunday in a swimming pool in Porto Cervo, on the Costa Smeralda in northern Sardinia. He was reportedly rescued after swallowing a large quantity of water and then taken to hospital, where doctors placed him in a medically induced coma.

No official medical bulletin has yet been released, but the situation has cast a shadow over Cagliari’s preparations at the very start of the season.

Trepy’s rise had been one of the quieter success stories at the club. A quick, direct forward, he joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris side Union Sportive Creteil and forced his way into the senior squad last term, scoring once in eight Serie A appearances.

Only days before the incident, he was on the pitch in competitive action. On Friday, he started Cagliari’s 1-0 win over Arezzo in the Coppa Italia, playing 54 minutes before being substituted. Now, instead of talking about his development, the club and its supporters are waiting for medical updates on a player whose career had just begun to open up.
