Youri Tielemans Waits for Manchester United Debut
Youri Tielemans will have to wait.
Manchester United’s new £35m midfielder, signed from Aston Villa earlier in the summer, will not feature against Atletico Madrid this afternoon, with Michael Carrick opting to hold back the Belgian as he eases into life at Carrington after a post‑World Cup break.
Tielemans has only just joined full training with his new team-mates and has been left out of the travelling squad for what is United’s third friendly of the summer. His debut will come, just not yet.
Carrick shows his hand at the back
While Tielemans sits this one out, Carrick is starting to reveal his thinking for the Premier League season.
There is no experimentation in defence. He goes again with what already looks like his preferred back four: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw. All four retain their places, a clear sign that Carrick wants continuity and rhythm rather than a carousel of changes between these friendlies against Wrexham, Rosenborg and now Atletico.
Where others might shuffle the pack heavily in July, Carrick is tightening the screws on a core group.
Midfield balance and a missing No9
In midfield, Mason Mount drops deeper once more, partnering Andrey Santos at the base. It is a pairing built on energy and control, designed to give United a platform while still allowing Mount to step forward when the game opens up.
That platform frees up Shea Lacey to stay in his favoured No10 role. The youngster keeps his place after catching the eye earlier in pre-season, and he will again be tasked with threading passes between the lines and linking with the front three.
Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu start, offering contrasting threats from the flanks. But there is a notable absence through the middle: no Joshua Zirkzee leading the line. His omission leaves a question mark over how United will structure their attack against a seasoned Atletico defence, and who will take on the responsibility of stretching the back line.
Young guns wait for their moment
If the starting XI leans towards stability, the bench bristles with ambition.
Ethan Williams and Harry Amass, both fresh from goalscoring cameos against Rosenborg, are among the youngsters hoping for more than just a token run-out. They have already shown they can seize a moment; now they will want a bigger stage and more minutes to force their way into Carrick’s thoughts.
For Tielemans, the wait for a first appearance in red goes on. For those already in Carrick’s plans, the audition is very much live.
