Youri Tielemans' Wait for Manchester United Debut

Youri Tielemans will have to wait.

Manchester United’s new £35m signing has travelled north, settled in at Carrington and linked up with his new team-mates after a post‑World Cup break, but his first appearance in red will not come against Atletico Madrid this afternoon.

Michael Carrick has chosen to leave the Belgian out of the travelling squad for United’s third friendly of the summer, preferring to hold him back for a slightly later introduction rather than rush him into action days after he walked through the door.

Carrick keeps his core intact

While some managers treat pre-season as an endless carousel of changes, Carrick has gone the other way. Between the friendlies against Wrexham and Rosenborg he resisted the temptation to rip things up, and that theme continues here.

His selections are beginning to look like the framework for his Premier League XI. At the back, he has settled on a first-choice four: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw. That unit is getting valuable minutes together, not just fitness work but rhythm, positioning, habits.

Behind them, Radek Vitek is expected to keep his place in goal. Tielemans’ compatriot Senne Lammens also reported for training this week but, like the Belgian midfielder, has not travelled, clearing the path for the young keeper to continue.

Midfield shape and attacking balance

In midfield, Carrick is trusting familiar faces. Mason Mount lines up alongside Andrey Santos at the base, a pairing built to control possession and feed the more expressive players ahead of them.

That structure allows Shea Lacey to stay in the No10 role, where he impressed in earlier outings. He will again be the creative hinge between midfield and attack, flanked by Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu out wide. Joshua Zirkzee leads the line, tasked with stretching Atletico’s defence and giving United a focal point.

It is a side that mixes established names with emerging ones, but there is nothing experimental about the shape. Carrick is drilling combinations, not just ticking off minutes.

Absentees and opportunity

There are notable absentees beyond Tielemans. Tyler Fredricson is out of the picture altogether after his move to Lausanne-Sport was completed in midweek. Benjamin Sesko is still understood to be managing a shin problem and may not feature, a precaution rather than a gamble at this stage of the summer.

Their absence opens the door for others. The bench will again be stacked with academy and fringe talent eager to turn a quiet pre-season into something louder.

Ethan Williams, Jacob Devaney and Harry Amass all found the net in cameos against Rosenborg and will be pushing for more than a token run-out this time. Another goal, another sharp contribution, and the conversation around their role in the coming season starts to change.

For Tielemans, the wait to pull on a United shirt goes on by a few days. For everyone else, this is another chance to nail down a place before the new signing walks straight into the fight for minutes.
