Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter already feels close to its final pages. The Dutch forward, once paraded as a key piece of United’s rebuild, is now at the centre of a summer scramble, with clubs across Europe sensing an opportunity.
United are open to a sale. Zirkzee, after a bruising spell in English football, is listening.
Two unnamed Premier League clubs have made discreet checks on his situation, testing the water without yet committing. Ajax also called to ask where United stand, a natural link for a Dutch striker in need of a reset. But the Amsterdam option has faded almost as quickly as it emerged. With Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare already through the door, Ajax’s attacking department is stocked. Their interest has cooled.
Serie A return on the table
Juventus have stepped forward with intent. The Turin club are pushing to take Zirkzee on loan, a structure that would limit their risk while gambling on his ceiling. Talks are focused on a temporary deal, and Zirkzee has, according to reports, given his approval to a return to Serie A.

The Premier League has rarely seen it.
Promise vs Premier League reality
The numbers tell their own story. Across the past two league seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 Premier League appearances. Five goals. For a centre-forward at a club of United’s scale, that return is stark.
This has not been a case of a player frozen out completely. He has been used, often from the bench, often in uncomfortable circumstances, asked to adapt on the fly to a league that punishes hesitation and demands constant intensity. The technical gifts that shone in Italy have not consistently translated into end product in England’s faster, more physical rhythm.
United’s openness to a sale reflects that gap between expectation and reality. They paid for a leading man. Too often, he has felt like a supporting act.
A reminder of what he can do
Yet the talent has not vanished. It resurfaced in pre-season, in a game that will barely register for most supporters but may prove pivotal for his future. Against Rosenborg, Zirkzee produced the kind of goal that made scouts fall for him in the first place: an excellent finish, wrapped inside a confident, all-round performance.
For suitors, that matters. It is proof that the player who lit up Serie A is still in there, waiting for the right environment and the right role.

So Zirkzee stands at a familiar modern crossroads for young forwards at superclubs. Stay and fight for minutes in a league that has already tested him to the limit? Or jump, while his stock remains high enough, to a club and a competition that once suited him perfectly?
