Barcelona's Flick Seeks Reinforcements After Basel Friendly
Hansi Flick walked away from Barcelona’s latest pre-season test satisfied with the scoreline, encouraged by the attitude – and still very aware that his squad is not yet complete.
Barcelona hit five past FC Basel in a lively friendly, a response to the more subdued showing at the three-way tournament in Udine. The performance eased a few concerns. It did not close the transfer window in Flick’s mind.
Flick wants “a few more players”
Speaking to the club’s media after the game, the Barcelona coach made no attempt to hide his view of the market situation. Asked directly about strengthening the squad, Flick was blunt: “I think we need a few more players.”
The line was short, but it carried weight. With the La Liga opener against Elche looming, the German sees a team still under construction, a group that needs help as much as it needs time.
Flick stressed that the next few days will be decisive in shaping Barcelona’s final transfer decisions. The Basel game, the upcoming friendly, the training sessions – all of it will feed into the club’s thinking.
“We’ll analyse this match and also the training sessions. And we’ve got a match this week, so we’ll see,” he said, leaving the door wide open to more arrivals before the window shuts.
What matters most to him right now, though, is not the rumour mill but the daily work. “The most important thing is how we train – the quality and the intensity – and that’s very good. I can see the standard of the team and that’s what matters most.”
Balancing minutes, managing bodies
The five goals against Basel offered a clear attacking statement, with Karim Adeyemi among those catching the eye. Yet Flick’s decisions on his starting XI and substitutions were dictated less by form than by fitness.
“Some players arrived five days ago and we have to prepare for the match against Elche: we have to think about who can start, who can play the full ninety minutes, and we can only make five substitutions,” he explained.
That reality shaped the entire evening. Barcelona’s staff juggled workloads, pushed some players, protected others. “All of this influences how we want to manage this match,” Flick added, underlining that this phase is about building legs as much as building patterns.
Encouraging test, clear warnings
The scoreline flattered no one; Barcelona were good value for their five goals. Yet Flick’s assessment of the contest against Basel was measured.
“It was a good test for us; Basel played well. It wasn’t easy playing against them,” he said. The Swiss side asked enough questions to expose a few flaws that will not be forgiven when competitive football returns.
“Perhaps in the first half we didn’t play as quickly as we’d have liked, either in terms of positioning or off the ball. That’s what we need to improve on. We’ve got potential, and I’m pleased with the test,” he concluded.
Five goals, a firmer idea of who is ready for Elche, and a coach still pushing for reinforcements. Barcelona’s pre-season is ticking along, but the real statement may yet come not on the pitch, but in the final days of the transfer window.
