Chelsea's Liam Delap: £40m Transfer Decision Looms
Chelsea’s summer clear-out is gathering pace, and now all eyes are on Liam Delap.
Como boss Cesc Fabregas has already raided west London once. He is not finished. According to talkSPORT, the former Spain international has turned his attention to the 23-year-old striker as he looks to sharpen his attack for a Champions League campaign that still feels surreal for the Italian club.
Chelsea’s £40m stance
Delap’s first year at Stamford Bridge never really caught fire. Fitness problems disrupted his rhythm, minutes were patchy, and he finished the Premier League season with just a single goal. For a young forward arriving with serious promise, it was a bruising introduction.
Chelsea, though, are treating him as an asset, not a write-off.
The hierarchy are open to a sale but only at their price: £40m. That figure would bank a £10m profit and help ease the pressure to slim down a swollen first-team squad before the September deadline. With a major overhaul under new manager Xabi Alonso already underway, Delap sits squarely in the “saleable” column.
The club’s stance is clear. Anyone who wants him will have to pay.
Como’s Champions League lure vs Premier League pull
On paper, Como’s pitch is enticing. A rising project, a legendary midfielder in the dugout, and Champions League football on offer. For a 23-year-old trying to relaunch his career, it sounds like a dream.
But Delap’s own priorities complicate the story.
He is understood to be keen to stay in the Premier League, even if that means turning down the glamour of European nights with Como. The chance to prove himself in England’s top flight, after a stuttering first attempt, still carries enormous weight.
So while Como remain hopeful, they are not alone at the table.
Forest enter the race
Nottingham Forest have joined the chase and could yet shift the whole picture. They are expected to be busy late in the window, with Taiwo Awoniyi poised to move to Coventry City. A vacancy is opening up at centre-forward, and Delap fits the profile: young, athletic, with upside.
Forest know the risk. His Chelsea numbers are modest, his body has let him down over the past year. But his stock has not collapsed.
That is largely because of what he did at Ipswich Town. During their first season back in the top flight, Delap hit 12 goals and looked every inch a Premier League striker in the making. Those performances still echo around recruitment meetings. They are the reason clubs are prepared to test Chelsea’s resolve.
Club future, country future
Delap’s next decision will not just shape his club career.
He has represented England throughout the youth ranks but has yet to break into the senior Three Lions squad. At the same time, he remains eligible for the Republic of Ireland through his father, former long-throw specialist Rory Delap.
Regular football at the right level could tilt that international equation. Stay in the Premier League and thrive, and England conversations start again. Move abroad and shine in the Champions League, and both nations will be watching closely.
Either way, this move will echo beyond one transfer window.
Alonso’s rebuild gathers momentum
Around him, Chelsea are changing fast. Under Xabi Alonso, the club are pushing through a significant reset that could also see Nicolas Jackson depart, with Aston Villa circling. The message is ruthless but familiar: no one is safe if the numbers and the strategy demand otherwise.
In that climate, Delap’s exit feels less a question of “if” and more of “where” and “when”.
Will he gamble on a fresh start under Fabregas in Europe, or double down on his Premier League ambitions with Forest or another late suitor? The clock is ticking, the price is set, and for a 23-year-old still chasing his true breakthrough, this might be the defining call of his career.
