Ba's Rapid Rise as a Top Defender in Portugal
Ba’s rise from winter squad player to one of the most-watched defenders in Portugal has been sharp, rugged, and impossible to ignore.
The Senegalese centre-back forced his way into the starting XI at fifth-placed Famalicão over the winter break and has not looked back. Nineteen league appearances, two goals, one assist, and – the moment that really put his name on wider scouting lists – a match-winning strike in mid-March in the 1-0 victory over CD Nacional. For a defender, those numbers are a bonus. The real story lies in how quickly he has grown into a pillar of a side punching above its weight.
Across all competitions, Ba has already racked up 26 senior appearances. That workload reflects trust. Famalicão did not just hand him minutes; they handed him responsibility.
His journey has moved just as quickly as his development. Loaned in 2023 from Senegalese club AJEL Rufisque to French side FC Valenciennes, Ba then made the jump to Portugal a year later, joining Famalicão on a free transfer. A smart piece of business that now looks like a bargain. The club recently tied him down until 2030, a clear signal they see him as a cornerstone for the future.
That long contract has not cooled outside interest. Portuguese outlet Record reports that Sporting CP, fresh from a Champions League quarter-final run, are keeping a close eye on the young defender. A long-term deal might protect Famalicão’s position, but it will not stop the questions from bigger clubs if his trajectory continues at this pace.
Ba is not the only emerging talent in Portugal drawing glances from abroad. According to Maisfutebol, Borussia Dortmund have widened their search and are also tracking Bastien Meupiyou of CD Alverca. The 20-year-old, under contract until 2028, fits the same profile: young, athletic, and mouldable at the highest level.
Dortmund’s interest in defenders is no coincidence. Nico Schlotterbeck’s recent contract extension has secured one key piece of their back line, yet Niklas Süle is expected to leave on a free transfer in the summer. That looming gap in central defence has pushed BVB into the market, and the list of names is growing.
Alongside Ba and Meupiyou, rumours link Marcos Senesi of AFC Bournemouth and former Dortmund academy product Aron Anselmino, currently on loan at Racing Strasbourg from Chelsea. The pattern is clear: Dortmund want a blend of experience and upside, someone who can slot into a Champions League-chasing squad but still has room to grow.
Anselmino’s case carries an emotional edge in Dortmund. Speaking before Friday’s Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen, head coach Niko Kovac admitted he keeps tabs on the Argentine’s development: “Sometimes I check how Strasbourg have played or whether he’s even featured. That’s quite normal. It does pain me, though, that he doesn’t play as often as he used to, or as often as he would have done with us.”
Those words underline why BVB are casting the net so widely. They cannot afford to miss on the next defender who can anchor their back line for years.
For now, Ba remains in Portugal, contract secure, status rising. Famalicão enjoy the benefits, Sporting CP watch closely, and Dortmund take notes. The only real unknown is where his next step lands: Lisbon, the Bundesliga, or another stage entirely.
