Brighton Break Transfer Record for Luka Vuskovic from Spurs

Brighton have torn up their own transfer script to land one of Europe’s most coveted young defenders, signing Croatia international Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham in a club-record £46m deal.

The 19-year-old arrives on a five-year contract with an option for a further year, and the fee could climb to £50m with add-ons. For a club that has built its reputation on smart, relatively modest deals, this is a statement. A loud one.

Brighton get their man

Brighton had two bids rejected last month. They kept coming. Spurs eventually relented, and Vuskovic now walks into the Amex as the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Fabian Hurzeler has made no secret of how long Brighton have tracked the defender.

“Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment,” the head coach said, underlining just how central Vuskovic is to the club’s plans.

The noise around the transfer has been intense. Hurzeler moved quickly to cut through the hype.

“There's been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League,” he said. “We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”

Big fee. Bigger expectations. Brighton know exactly what they’re buying.

From Split prodigy to Bundesliga breakout

Born in Split, Vuskovic came through the academy at Hajduk, where he didn’t just break into the first team – he smashed records. He became the youngest player to appear in Croatia’s top flight at 16, then the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer.

Tottenham moved early, agreeing a deal in advance and officially bringing him to north London in 2025. His time at Spurs was brief and strategic: they sent him straight to Hamburg on loan, and that’s where his reputation exploded.

Thirty Bundesliga appearances. Six goals from centre-back. Not just solid, but dominant.

By the end of the campaign he had been named Rookie of the Season and earned a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Year. For a teenager in a new league, it was a season that turned heads across Europe.

International recognition followed. Vuskovic already has six senior caps and one goal for Croatia, and last month he made his World Cup debut against England in the group stages. He did not look out of place.

A defensive reshuffle with Spurs

This is not just Brighton buying from Tottenham. It’s a defensive swap at the top end of the Premier League.

Jan Paul van Hecke, a key figure in Brighton’s back line, has moved in the opposite direction, joining Spurs on a long-term deal worth £52m. Hurzeler’s defensive unit will look very different when the new season kicks off.

Vuskovic steps straight into the space vacated by the Netherlands centre-back. Different profile, similar responsibility. Van Hecke brought experience in Brighton’s system; Vuskovic brings height, aggression, and the air of a player on a rapid upward curve.

Brighton have rarely been shy in trusting youth. This is that philosophy, supercharged.

All eyes on Villa opener

The timing is no coincidence. Brighton open their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August at 14:00 BST. Hurzeler will want his new signing settled as quickly as possible, even if he remains cautious about throwing him into the deep end too soon.

The Premier League is an unforgiving testing ground, even for a defender who has already handled the Bundesliga and a World Cup stage. But Brighton have built their modern era on seeing the future before everyone else.

Now they’ve paid record money on the belief that Luka Vuskovic is the next piece of that vision. The only question left is how fast he can turn promise into dominance on England’s biggest stage.
