Chelsea Sets £120m Deadline for Manchester City Bid on Enzo Fernandez

The Premier League summer transfer window in 2026 has been marked by huge spending, especially in midfield. A record-breaking £116m move took Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City, only for Chelsea to top that with a £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

Now, both clubs are locked in a high-stakes transfer battle over Argentina's Enzo Fernandez, whose performances helped defeat England in the World Cup semifinal.

Deadline Details and Valuation

Chelsea has told Manchester City to meet a £120 million valuation for Fernandez by Friday at 5 p.m. BST (12 p.m. ET), according to The Athletic. If City fail to submit a suitable bid by then, Chelsea insists the midfielder won’t be sold this window. Fernandez and his representatives have known about this price since May, making the deadline public knowledge.

Why Man City Are Interested

Enzo Maresca, who starts as Pep Guardiola’s replacement at City after leaving Chelsea mid-2025/26, rates Fernandez highly. Despite questions over his temperament following a World Cup final red card, the 25-year-old has impressed consistently since joining Chelsea from Benfica for £106.8m in January 2023.

  • Appearances: 167
  • Goals: 31
  • Assists: 29

His long-range shooting was evident with a crucial World Cup equalizer against England, while his late winner versus Egypt showed his knack for key moments. City also felt his impact firsthand when he scored a stoppage-time equalizer against them shortly after Maresca left Chelsea.

Fernandez excels at controlling midfield tempo, a trait familiar from his early days at River Plate. With players like Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki poised for No. 10 roles at City, Fernandez's versatility fits well.

Though small and occasionally inconsistent in defense, City values him as a potential elite midfielder amid recent departures of stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva.

Replacing Rodri?

City’s interest in Fernandez predates other clubs’ bids for Rodri, their current Spanish World Cup-winning captain. Should Rodri leave, Anderson would likely assume the deep-lying role. Anderson said recently, "I can do various things within midfield," showing flexibility similar to Fernandez.

Fernandez and Anderson could complement each other in midfield, a more practical plan than finding a direct Rodri replacement. City's experience during Rodri’s injury absence showed the challenge of replicating his defensive prowess, despite capable playmakers like Mateo Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez.

Several midfielders may leave if Fernandez arrives, including Tijjani Reijnders, who has attracted interest from Al Qadsiah. Meanwhile, City is also pursuing Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi, unrelated to Fernandez's deal.

Will City Meet Chelsea’s Deadline?

Former director Txiki Begiristain might have walked away from Chelsea’s firm stance, but successor Hugo Viana favors seizing transfer opportunities early, as seen in January deals. Chelsea’s asking price seems reasonable given Anderson’s record fee and Fernandez’s World Cup pedigree.

The deadline could backfire on Chelsea if no offer arrives by Friday, exposing them before the transfer window closes September 1.

Fernandez faced a two-match ban at Chelsea after a controversial interview hinting at Real Madrid ambitions. Madrid quickly denied interest. Fernandez and his agent Javier Pastore are used to high-profile negotiations, so City expects some wiggle room after the deadline passes.

Controversy Surrounding Fernandez

Despite his talent, Fernandez carries baggage. His April interview displeased Chelsea, and his role in Argentina's heated World Cup win over England means he might face jeers at Premier League stadiums.

Tensions between Chelsea and City linger after Maresca’s switch, which involved a £17m compensation and awkward timing of discussions.

City fans recall a 2024 video of Fernandez singing an offensive chant about France after Argentina’s Copa America win. The French Football Federation condemned it as racist. Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana shared the video criticizing such behavior.

Fernandez apologized publicly: "I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations. The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry."
