Conor Coady All-Clear After Head Injury on 500th Appearance
Conor Coady’s 500th senior club appearance ended in harrowing fashion, but crucially with good news hours later.
The Charlton defender was knocked out cold deep into stoppage time of Monday’s 1-1 draw at Watford, collapsing after throwing himself in front of a fierce Tom Ince drive. As the ball cannoned off his head, Coady crumpled to the turf and Vicarage Road fell silent.
Players frantically waved on the medical staff. Medics from both clubs sprinted across the pitch as the referee halted play, and what had been a tense Championship contest suddenly felt utterly irrelevant. Treatment went on for the best part of ten minutes. Television cameras, which had lingered at first, eventually turned away as the seriousness of the situation became clear.
Coady was placed on a stretcher and taken straight to a local hospital for assessment and scans, with team-mates visibly shaken as he left the field.
Relief finally arrived in the evening. In a statement, Charlton confirmed the 33-year-old had been discharged and allowed home.
“Conor Coady has been discharged from hospital following a head injury sustained in Monday’s 1-1 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road. The 33-year-old was knocked unconscious after being struck by a shot in stoppage time. He was stretchered off and taken to a local hospital, where he underwent a series of scans.
“Coady has since been given the all-clear and was discharged this evening. The club would like to thank Watford's medical staff for their support and assistance. Charlton's medical staff will continue to monitor him in line with the appropriate protocols.”
The incident cast a long shadow over a result that did little for Watford’s fading play-off hopes but pushed Charlton eight points clear of the Championship relegation zone. On a night loaded with jeopardy at both ends of the table, Coady’s late intervention summed up the visitors’ defiance.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones underlined exactly that when he spoke afterwards. For him, the injury was bound up with the character of his team and the milestone his defender had just reached.
“He was taken off and taken to hospital. He put his body on the line on his 500th appearance and gets knocked out and that typifies the performance. We'll update everyone as soon as we know more,” Jones said.
A landmark game, a brutal reminder of the risks defenders live with, and a club now clinging to the positive: their leader is back home, and their fight to stay in the division goes on.
