Diomande: Real Madrid's Record Signing Ready for Stardom

The first time Diomande heard Real Madrid wanted him, he didn’t celebrate. He didn’t sleep.

"It was like a dream because there is no bigger club," the 19-year-old winger told SportyTV, still sounding half in disbelief. "From the moment I found out, I couldn't sleep. I couldn't believe it."

One of Europe’s most explosive young talents is now a record signing at the Bernabeu, walking into a dressing room that already houses Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. For a teenager who only recently broke through, it is a dizzying leap. He insists he is ready.

"I am proud and happy because I have made my dream come true," he said. The words are simple. The step he has taken is anything but.

Mourinho at 5am

Behind the move sits a familiar figure. José Mourinho did not just sign off on Diomande. He chased him.

"Mourinho got up at 5 in the morning to talk to me. That means he is important," Diomande revealed. Those early calls, across time zones and doubt, cut through any hesitation. "When Madrid calls you, you can't say no, so I said: 'If they want me, that's where I'll be.'

The connection between the two was immediate once he landed in Madrid.

"As soon as I arrived, he told me: 'I promised you that you were going to be part of my team, and here you are,'" Diomande recalled. "And I told him: 'I’m happy to work with you because you are the best.' I can learn a lot from him; he is the right coach to continue my development. I am prepared to die for him."

Strong words from a teenager stepping into one of the most demanding environments in football. But they speak to the bond already forming between winger and manager.

‘I Didn’t Ask for Anyone’

Mourinho, though, has been keen to draw a line between influence and control. In his own interview, he stressed that he did not storm back into the Bernabeu with a shopping list.

"No, I didn't ask for anyone," he said when pressed on whether Diomande was a personal request. "I came in without demanding a single player, having taken a good look at the squad and knowing exactly what I wanted to happen."

The club brought him the opportunity. Mourinho didn’t hesitate.

"Finding a wide player [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive, and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough," he explained. "Add to that the fact that he's young, has room to develop, and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... when that opportunity came up, I didn't want to get into whether he cost 120, 80, 40, or 20 [million]."

Price tags can suffocate young players at Madrid. Mourinho is trying to strip that away. For him, Diomande is not a number. He is a weapon.

From Leganes to the Bernabeu

There is a neat twist in Diomande’s story. His professional debut came at the Bernabeu, but not in white.

He first walked onto that pitch with Leganes, the club that gave him his chance and still holds a special place in his heart.

"It is God's doing. I believe a lot in God," he said. "It has been quite a coincidence. I just want to enjoy every day."

From that debut, one memory stands out above the rest.

"From that match I remember swapping shirts with Mbappe, and today we are in the same dressing room laughing together," he said. "I will never forget Leganes because it was the only club that gave me the opportunity to show my quality."

From trading shirts with Mbappe to trading passes with him: the journey has moved fast.

A New Piece in a Loaded Attack

Diomande arrives as a winger who can operate on either flank, a direct, aggressive runner with the kind of profile Real Madrid have built eras around. His versatility will be central to Mourinho’s plans as the club chase domestic and European dominance again.

La Liga. The Champions League. A record signing still shy of his 20th birthday. A manager he is "prepared to die for."

The Bernabeu has seen countless stars walk through its doors. The question now is simple: how quickly will Diomande make it feel like home?
