Elche Secures Vital Win Against Mallorca in Relegation Battle
Relegation tension crackled at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero as Elche came from behind to beat Mallorca 2–1 in La Liga’s Regular Season - 29, a result that dramatically reshapes the battle at the bottom.
Mallorca’s nerves showed even before kick-off, with Pablo Maffeo booked for argument in the warm-up period at -5', setting an edgy tone. Once the game began, it unfolded as a tight, tactical contest: Elche in a 3-5-2 under Eder Sarabia, Mallorca in a 4-2-3-1 shaped by Martin Demichelis, both aware of the stakes with just a point separating them at the start of the day.
The first half was cagey and goalless, but not without bite. On 29', Víctor Chust went into the book for a foul, emblematic of Elche’s aggressive approach out of possession. Chances were limited, with Mallorca edging the ball (they would finish with 53% possession) but struggling to turn control into clear openings. Elche, more vertical and direct, posed the greater threat inside the box, ultimately registering 10 shots from that zone to Mallorca’s 6.
Second Half
The game opened up after the interval. On 58', Mallorca struck first. P. Torre scored, assisted by Z. Luvumbo, finishing a flowing move that finally sliced through Elche’s back three. With the visitors already above expectation in terms of their 1.37 expected_goals, it felt like a potentially decisive moment in a six-pointer.
Elche, however, responded with impressive conviction. Just four minutes later, on 62', R. Mir scored with a sharp finish to level the contest, capitalising on one of the hosts’ 10 shots in the area. The equaliser galvanised the home crowd and shifted the momentum firmly in Sarabia’s favour.
The coaches moved quickly to reshape the game. On 64', G. Villar came on for G. Diangana, giving Elche fresh legs and more control in midfield. A minute later, Demichelis made a double change to regain the initiative: at 65', S. Darder came on for P. Torre, and M. Morlanes came on for Z. Luvumbo, removing both the scorer and provider of Mallorca’s goal in search of stability and creativity from deeper positions.
Instead, it was Elche who struck next. On 71', Tete Morente scored, assisted by G. Valera, sweeping home a well-worked move from the right to complete the turnaround and put Elche 2–1 up. It was a goal that reflected their attacking efficiency: 13 total shots, 4 on target, and an overall expected_goals of 1.6, marginally above Mallorca’s tally.
Sarabia then turned to game management. On 79', F. Redondo Solari came on for M. Aguado to add energy in midfield, and a minute later, at 80', Buba Sangare came on for R. Mir, sacrificing the goalscorer for defensive solidity. Mallorca, chasing the game, saw frustration rise. Toni Lato was booked for a foul on 82', a sign of the visitors’ growing desperation.
Demichelis made one final attacking roll of the dice on 89', when J. Kalumba came on for A. Sanchez, pushing more bodies forward in search of an equaliser. Mallorca’s late pressure culminated in high drama in stoppage time.
On 90', a VAR review saw a penalty confirmed for Mallorca after an incident involving Samu Costa, briefly raising hopes of a lifeline. The tension spilled over, with Antonio Raíllo shown a yellow card for argument at 90+3' as protests surrounded the decision and its aftermath. Elche continued to manage the clock, making a double substitution at 90+5': L. Petrot came on for A. Rodriguez, and A. Pedrosa came on for G. Valera, further shoring up the flanks and back line. Deep into added time, at 90+7', Léo Pétrot was booked for a foul as Elche dug in to protect their narrow lead.
Ultimately, Mallorca could not find a second goal. Elche’s goalkeeper M. Dituro made 3 saves, matching L. Roman’s 2 at the other end, while both sides registered 3 blocked shots, underlining the defensive commitment on display.
From a standings perspective, the impact is enormous. Elche, who began on 29 points with 38 goals for and 46 against, now move to 32 points with 40 goals scored and 47 conceded, tightening their grip on safety. Mallorca, starting on 28 points with 34 goals for and 47 against, remain stuck on 28, now at 35 goals scored and 49 conceded, their relegation worries deepening.
In a match defined by fine margins and fierce commitment, Elche’s resilience after falling behind, coupled with sharper finishing and smarter in-game management, earned them a vital victory in the survival race.
