Glentoran Defeats Linfield 2-1 to Reach Women's Irish Cup Semi-Finals
Glentoran edged out fierce rivals Linfield 2-1 at the Blanchflower Stadium to book their place in the semi-finals of the Women's Irish Cup, with Naomi McLaughlin delivering a match-winning brace.
The forward broke the deadlock nine minutes before the interval, striking in the 36th minute to give Kim Turner's side control in a typically tense derby. Linfield, though, refused to fold. Cora Chambers hauled the Blues level, setting up a frantic finale as the tie swung back into the balance.
The pressure finally told. With just eight minutes left, McLaughlin stepped up again, grabbing her second of the night to tilt a gripping contest back Glentoran's way and seal their passage into the last four.
Cup holders Cliftonville moved through with far less drama, easing past Derry City 3-0. An early own goal handed the Reds a platform, and they never looked like wasting it. Teegan Lynch struck to tighten their grip on the tie, before Louise McDaniel added another after the break to complete a routine, controlled victory for the champions.
At Seaview, Crusaders Strikers had to fight for everything in a 2-1 win over Sion Swifts, the side who have already wrapped up the Championship title. Ali Nelson fired the Premiership outfit in front, and Rebecca Bassett doubled that advantage to put Crusaders in command.
Sion refused to go quietly. Substitute Caoimhe Heron pulled one back to set up a nervy finish, but Crusaders dug in and saw the game out, their resilience under pressure earning a place in the semi-finals.
Lisburn claimed the final spot in the last four, edging past Ballymena United 1-0 in a tight encounter that underlined just how unforgiving this stage of the competition has become.
With Glentoran, Cliftonville, Crusaders Strikers and Lisburn all through, the Women's Irish Cup is down to four clubs with very different stories – but only one will be lifting silverware when this run reaches its climax.
