Hansi Flick Confident Lamine Yamal Is Regaining Form Ahead of Barcelona’s Clash with Rayo Vallecano
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has shown strong belief in the progress of teenage winger Lamine Yamal, saying the young talent is starting to regain his best form. After a tough period marked by injury and demanding international duties, Flick notes that Yamal is beginning to enjoy playing again and showing flashes of his potential.
The Challenge of Recovery and International Play
Yamal’s season started slowly following a significant hamstring injury sustained in April. The 19-year-old faced intense pressure after returning to action and was quiet during the opening game against Elche. However, his performance improved notably in the recent win over Athletic Bilbao, where he completed the full 90 minutes and demonstrated moments of brilliance. Flick reassured fans about Yamal’s progress before their upcoming La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano.
“I know everyone is worried about how Lamine is doing. He played a World Cup after a huge injury,” Flick told reporters. “Now he’s back after three weeks’ holiday. The first game might not have been his best, but I was happy he started and worked for the team.”
Building Fitness Through Game Time
A key part of Yamal’s comeback has been gaining consistent minutes on the pitch. Flick emphasized the importance of Yamal playing entire matches as a way to rebuild his fitness. The manager was pleased with how the youngster held up physically in the Athletic Bilbao game, seeing it as a step forward in his recovery.
“He played 90 minutes against Bilbao. For him, right now, it’s good to get those full matches,” Flick said. “We saw him perform at a high level in some moments. You couldn’t see it in training today, but I did and it was excellent. Everyone loves Lamine and he’s in a good place. We have to keep supporting him, and we are.”
Mental State Improving Alongside Physical Fitness
Flick also touched on Yamal’s mental wellbeing, which had been a concern after the player seemed frustrated following the first game of the season. Lately, the mood around the training ground has shifted positively, with Yamal appearing more upbeat. This boost in confidence is crucial for a player who relies heavily on creativity and freedom on the field.
“It’s always good when players are smiling, but not every day is the same. I don’t smile every day either — that’s just how it goes,” Flick remarked.
Squad Depth and Forward Options
While spotlight remains on Yamal, Flick also addressed the broader attacking lineup. Barcelona began the season with Raphinha playing as an improvised striker due to the club missing out on signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. Despite this setback, Flick expressed satisfaction with the squad and the ongoing efforts by sporting director Deco to strengthen the team before the transfer window closes.
“I’m happy with my team. Deco is working to strengthen it. We don’t feel pressured,” Flick said.
