Harry Kane Reflects on Premier League Return and Life at Bayern Munich

Harry Kane has cooled talk of a Premier League homecoming, admitting the urge to return to England and chase down Alan Shearer’s record “isn't there as much anymore” as life at Bayern Munich continues to reshape his ambitions.

The England captain left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023 with 213 Premier League goals to his name, 47 short of Shearer’s all-time mark of 260. For years, that number hung over every conversation about his future. Now, it no longer dominates his thinking.

Kane’s itch to return has faded

“When I first left, for sure it was something I thought – I would definitely be coming back,” Kane said. “That itch isn't there as much anymore.

“I am extremely happy here in Munich, it opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England and it has made me appreciate European football even more.

“I just think the team we have here and the manager, my family is really settled here, it is just about being in the best place possible.

“Never say never, but for now I am concentrating on Bayern Munich and we will see what the future holds.”

His words came on Wednesday as he collected the Golden Shoe after finishing as the Bundesliga’s top scorer, the latest personal prize in a staggering campaign for club and country.

Kane struck 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern last season as Vincent Kompany’s side completed a league and cup double, contributing to a total haul of 73 goals across all competitions for club and country. The numbers were ruthless, even by his standards.

Contract talks on the horizon

Kane is now into the final 12 months of the four-year deal he signed when he joined Bayern for £86.4m from Spurs. Rather than fuelling speculation about a Premier League return, that timeline is expected to trigger discussions over a new contract in Munich.

He is settled. His family is settled. And crucially, he believes his football has reached a new peak in Germany.

“I think this is the best version of myself for sure,” he said. “I think last season speaks for itself, from that sense the best season in my career no doubt.”

Kompany’s impact and a new level

Kompany took charge at Bayern in 2024 and has quickly earned Kane’s trust and admiration. The former Manchester City defender has, in Kane’s eyes, sharpened his game again.

“Since the boss has come in he has elevated my game to another level,” Kane explained. “That is down to the style of play, the way we attack and the way we defend, the way he gives players freedom to sometimes receive the ball deeper and sometimes arrive late in the box.”

The role is not entirely new. Kane has long been more than a penalty-box finisher, dropping into pockets to create as well as score.

“I also had a lot of this and these kind of different positions during my Tottenham career as well, especially from the Mourinho stage onwards, it was the same sort of thing – I had freedom to come deep and get the ball and I had a great relationship with Son Heung-min.

“It has been building but I think this season with the team I have around me, the players we have and the system we play with the coach, it has just elevated me to another level.”

The Premier League record once looked like the natural final chapter to Kane’s story. Right now, that script is being rewritten in Munich.
