Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona Permanently
Joao Cancelo is a Barcelona player again – this time for good.
The Catalan club confirmed the Portuguese full-back’s return with a flurry of posts on its official X account, finally closing a drawn-out saga that has hovered over their summer planning.
A Deal That Wouldn’t Go Away
Cancelo’s name has circled Barcelona for months. Earlier reports had pointed to a free transfer, with the defender agreeing to terminate his contract with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in exchange for waiving the rest of his salary there. The path was cleared, the paperwork followed, and Barcelona moved.
His new contract runs for three years, keeping him at the Spotify Camp Nou until 2029, a significant commitment to a player who has already become a familiar presence on the right flank.
Third Time, First Time Permanent
This is Cancelo’s third spell in Barcelona colours, but the first on a permanent deal.
He first arrived on loan from Manchester City for the 2023–24 season, then returned on another temporary deal from Al-Hilal for the second half of last season. Across that season and a half in Catalonia, he racked up 65 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing nine assists.
He did not just fill a gap. He helped deliver. Cancelo played his part in Barcelona’s La Liga title win last season, his versatility and aggression from full-back fitting neatly into the club’s attacking structure.
Saudi Chapter Closes
The move also draws a line under a short, uneven chapter in Saudi Arabia.
Cancelo joined Al-Hilal in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons on their books, but featured in only one of them after being cut from the domestic squad last term. In total, he played 45 matches in all competitions for the Riyadh giants, scoring three goals and laying on 14 assists.
The numbers were there. The trophies were not. He leaves Al-Hilal without a single title to his name.
Barcelona’s Summer Takes Shape
For Barcelona, this is not an isolated move but part of a broader rebuild.
Cancelo becomes their fifth signing of the window, following England’s Anthony Gordon, Germany’s Karim Adeyemi, Spain’s Rodri and Belgium’s Jesse Bisiou. The club have also triggered the purchase option for young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
A new core is forming. And with Cancelo now locked in until 2029, Barcelona have tied down one of the most attack-minded full-backs in Europe for the heart of their next cycle.
