Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid Secure Aurelien Tchouameni's Future
Jose Mourinho has barely settled back into his office at Valdebebas and he has already shut the door on Manchester United.
Aurelien Tchouameni, one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe and a long-standing United target, has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid, committing his peak years to the Bernabeu. At 26, the France international is understood to have extended his stay by a further five years, a firm statement that he sees his future in white, not red.
The timing stings for United. News of Tchouameni’s renewal emerged within hours of the club finalising a £50million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo his medical today. Santos is part of a broader midfield rebuild, not the centrepiece of it. United had tracked a cluster of options this summer – Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge among them – but Tchouameni was the elite name at the top of many recruitment wishlists.
The need is obvious. Even before Manuel Ugarte’s World Cup injury, United wanted multiple midfield additions. That setback has only sharpened the urgency, with Kobbie Mainoo currently the only fully fit central midfielder in the squad. Moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes collapsed under the weight of their price tags, leaving United to juggle ambition with financial reality.
Into that landscape stepped Mourinho and Madrid. According to RMC Sport, Tchouameni was adamant he would stay in Spain despite concrete approaches from other clubs, most notably United. For all the speculation that Madrid might cash in on the former Monaco man to reshape their squad, tying him down again was treated internally as a priority, not a luxury.
The pressure from England never truly shifted him. Madrid, for their part, have moved decisively. Mourinho will build around Tchouameni rather than sell him, folding the Frenchman into a core that has already been strengthened by four summer signings. Only one of those arrivals is a midfielder, and Bernardo Silva – the headline addition – will not directly contest Tchouameni’s role at the base of midfield. That area of the pitch is his to command.
Madrid have also been keen to control the narrative around their midfield plans. With rumours swirling about a possible move for Enzo Fernandez, the club took the unusual step of issuing a formal statement to publicly deny any interest in the Chelsea player. The wording left no room for doubt.
“In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognised, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.
“Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid's actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.
“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”
The message is clear: Madrid are not selling Tchouameni, they are not chasing Enzo, and they are not in the mood to let others dictate their midfield story.
For United, it leaves a familiar question hanging over the final stretch of the window. With Tchouameni off the table and injuries biting, how bold – and how creative – are they prepared to be to rebuild the heart of their team?
