Lazio Targets Mauro Icardi as Striker Option

Lazio have put Mauro Icardi at the top of their striker shortlist. For now, the feeling isn’t mutual.

The club are working to bring in the 33-year-old on a free transfer, seeing him as a ready-made No. 9 for the present, not a long-term gamble. Icardi’s pedigree in Serie A is not in doubt: he was one of the league’s deadliest finishers at Sampdoria between 2011 and 2013 and then at Inter from 2013 to 2019, where he wore the armband and regularly carried the scoring burden.

His career then took him to Paris Saint-Germain for three seasons and on to Galatasaray for four more. Since the start of the summer, he has been without a club, a big name unexpectedly adrift on the market.

Lazio moved quickly. In recent weeks, Icardi has been widely viewed as their primary attacking target, alongside Sassuolo forward Andrea Pinamonti. Angelo Fabiani and the club’s management opened talks, sensing an opportunity to land a proven goalscorer without a transfer fee.

The negotiations, though, have hit a wall.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Icardi and his entourage initially signalled a willingness to sit down with Lazio and explore a deal. Then the brakes went on. All discussions, Di Marzio reports, have been put on ice.

Earlier whispers pointed to money as the sticking point, with a sizeable gap between Lazio’s offer and Icardi’s salary demands. Di Marzio now paints a different picture: the decisive issue is not the wage packet, but the project.

At this stage of his career, Icardi believes he cannot afford a misstep. He wants the right sporting context, a team and system that match his ambitions and style, not just the next contract on the table. That stance has slowed everything down for Lazio, who are ready to move but can’t force the striker’s hand.

The plan from Icardi’s side is clear: wait. He is expected to take his time, listen to other proposals and then choose his next destination when he is convinced, not rushed. As a free agent, he holds a crucial advantage — he can sign even after the transfer window closes.

Lazio, though, don’t enjoy that luxury. Their season clock is ticking, and they cannot linger too long over a target who is not yet ready to commit.
