Liverpool Fans Demand Clarity Over Jeff Bezos Minority Stake Rumors

The Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly has called for transparency from Fenway Sports Group after news emerged linking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with a potential major minority stake in the Premier League club. This influential supporters' organization has urged the club to explain what this possible sale means for control and decision-making at Anfield.

Calls for Urgent Meeting Over Proposed Minority Sale

According to reports, a consortium including Bezos is close to securing about a 30% share in Liverpool. Spirit of Shankly (SoS) sent a formal request for an urgent discussion with club officials to understand how this investment could affect football operations and ownership dynamics.

Fans Emphasize Importance of Club Values and Control

"Given the circumstances that led to FSG’s takeover, who owns the club and how it’s governed—always prioritizing Liverpool FC and its fans—is fundamental to us," SoS stated. "The rumored 30% sale and the consortium behind it is a significant development. Ownership and custodianship are crucial to us all."

The group expressed worry about how new investors might influence key decisions, recalling changes seen at other clubs following similar investments that altered club management and football strategies in unwelcome ways.

Wealthy Consortium Brings Experience Questions

Bezos, with an estimated net worth of £210 billion, owns ventures like The Washington Post and Blue Origin but lacks experience in sports team investments, despite some ties to NFL franchises. The consortium also features Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, but the only member with sports business background is Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia recently stepped down as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers after 18 years.

FSG Open to Outside Investment, Fans Await Details

Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owner since 2010, has welcomed external investment before. The club’s value has surged from £300 million at purchase to around £4.5 billion today. Last month, FSG confirmed interest from the Bhatia-led group for a strategic minority stake. Supporters now wait for official details on board representation and influence before any deal finalizes.
