Liverpool Secure Future of Ibrahima Konaté Amidst Interest from Giants
Liverpool have moved decisively to protect one of their most valuable assets, closing in on a new deal for Ibrahima Konaté and swatting away the threat of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
The length of the contract has not been disclosed, but the intention is crystal clear. Konaté, 26, was on course to walk away from Anfield on a free when his current terms expired in the summer. Liverpool have chosen not to gamble. They are acting before Europe’s elite can.
That decision hits some powerful clubs where it hurts.
Real Madrid had placed the France international high on their defensive shortlist, viewing him as a prime candidate to refresh a back line that could soon lose two pillars. David Alaba’s exit is widely expected once his contract runs down, and uncertainty still hangs over Antonio Rüdiger, whose deal also approaches its end. For a club that has built eras on iron-clad defences, the prospect of Alaba and Rüdiger both departing in the same window is stark.
Konaté, with his blend of recovery pace, aerial dominance and Champions League pedigree, fit the profile perfectly. Madrid’s interest was no secret in European circles. If Liverpool complete the extension as anticipated, the Spanish giants will have to look elsewhere.
They are not alone in missing out. FC Bayern Munich also tracked Konaté as they assessed their own defensive future. At one stage, Bayern viewed him as a possible answer to the looming question around Dayot Upamecano, whose long-term status in Munich had come under scrutiny. The German champions even weighed up a move to pre-empt any upheaval at the heart of their back four.
That plan never materialised. Upamecano has since committed his future to Bayern, signing an extension and easing the pressure on the club to overhaul their central defence. With Konaté now on the verge of staying put at Anfield, that particular avenue is closing fast.
For Liverpool, this is about more than blocking rivals. It is about rewarding a defender who has grown into a central figure since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021 for €40 million.
Konaté has become a fixture under Arne Slot this season, trusted as a first-choice centre-back in a side that demands aggression on the front foot and composure under pressure. Across all competitions, he has already racked up 42 appearances, chipping in with two goals and offering the kind of physical presence that lets Liverpool hold a high line without flinching.
He is not the loudest voice in the squad, nor the most flamboyant, but his importance is obvious every time Liverpool face pace, power, or a barrage of crosses. When the back line steps up, Konaté is often the one sprinting back, covering ground that most defenders simply cannot.
That blend of reliability and upside is precisely what makes him so attractive to Europe’s superclubs – and why Liverpool cannot afford to lose him for free.
By moving early, Liverpool are doing what the best-run clubs do: eliminating avoidable risk. Letting a 26-year-old starting centre-back, with Champions League and Premier League experience, drift into the final months of his deal would have invited chaos and, eventually, regret.
Instead, the club are on the verge of turning a potential problem into a statement. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will have to redraw their defensive plans. Konaté, it seems, will continue marshalling the back line in red.
The only real question now is how central a role he plays in the next version of Liverpool – and how high that ceiling goes with him anchoring it.
