Manchester United Tracks Mason Greenwood's Potential Fenerbahce Move

Manchester United’s interest in Mason Greenwood never really went away. It simply changed shape.

Once the academy prodigy tipped for stardom at Old Trafford, Greenwood is now a potential windfall rather than a future No.11 – and the numbers attached to his next move explain why United are watching every development with sharp attention.

From Marseille revival to the market

Since leaving United for Marseille in 2024 in a £26 million deal, Greenwood has rebuilt his career in France with ruthless efficiency. Sixteen goals and seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances tell their own story: end product, consistency, and a player who has quickly become one of the most dangerous forwards in the division.

That resurgence has inevitably drawn eyes from across Europe. Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked ahead of the summer window. Marseille’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has only heightened the expectation that Greenwood will move on again.

For United, every rumour matters. The club inserted a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause into his Marseille transfer, a decision that now looks increasingly astute.

Fenerbahce step forward

The most concrete move has come from Turkey. Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has gone public, claiming the club have an agreement in place with Greenwood over a long-term deal.

“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said, declaring that the forward has already proved himself at the highest level of European football. He framed the potential signing as the fulfilment of an election promise: “I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”

The message is clear. Fenerbahce see Greenwood not as a gamble, but as a marquee signing to lead them through what Safi describes as the most valuable and productive years of his career.

Marseille’s price – and United’s cut

Personal terms may be in place, but that is only half the story. Fenerbahce still need to satisfy Marseille.

Reports in France suggest the Ligue 1 side are seeking around £47.5 million for the 24-year-old. If a deal lands anywhere near that figure, United’s sell-on clause becomes hugely significant. At 40 per cent of the full fee, a £47.5 million sale would deliver roughly £19 million back to Old Trafford.

For a player who no longer has a future in Manchester, that is serious business. It would represent a sizeable injection into United’s transfer budget without any outgoing replacement required, exactly the kind of smart, legacy-based income elite clubs now rely on.

Marseille weigh their options

Inside Marseille, Greenwood’s situation remains delicate. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi, speaking to L’Equipe, underlined that the club are still weighing up the best route forward.

“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it.

“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”

The message is diplomatic, but the reality is straightforward: Marseille know they possess a valuable asset, and they intend to maximise his price while respecting the player’s wishes and the dynamics of the market.

A transfer with echoes at Old Trafford

Greenwood’s next move will not just reshape his own career. It will ripple back to Manchester, into a recruitment department trying to juggle Financial Fair Play, squad refresh, and long-term planning.

United will not decide where he goes. They will not sit at the negotiating table. Yet when the final fee is agreed – whether with Fenerbahce or another suitor tempted into the race – a significant slice of it will land at Old Trafford.

For a club intent on rebuilding, that kind of unexpected boost can change the tone of a summer.
