Manchester United Target Edmond Tapsoba Amid Transfer Battle
Manchester United have moved to the front of the queue for Edmond Tapsoba, edging ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the battle to prise the defender away from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 27-year-old, a cornerstone of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title-winning back line, has been on the radar of all three Premier League clubs. German outlet Fussball Daten reported earlier in the week that United, Spurs and Newcastle had each made contact with Tapsoba’s representatives to explore a deal.
Now, according to TEAMtalk, United have taken control of the chase. Their talks with the player’s camp are described as the most advanced, with all three English sides having formally opened dialogue but the Old Trafford hierarchy pushing hardest.
United step up for €50m-rated Tapsoba
Leverkusen are not in a rush to sell. Tapsoba signed a contract extension until 2031 earlier this year, and the German champions would prefer to keep one of their defensive pillars. But there is a price.
The club have set a firm valuation of €50million (£42.8m / $58.4m). Meet that, and the door opens.
Inside Leverkusen, Tapsoba is viewed as one of the Bundesliga’s most complete centre-backs: powerful in duels, comfortable building from the back, and athletic enough to patrol big spaces. That mix has made him a natural target for Premier League sides searching for a modern central defender who can both defend and dictate.
For United, the timing is no accident. INEOS are already trying to close a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba and are scouring the market for a new left-back. But the need at centre-half is growing louder.
Carrick needs more than promises
Head coach Michael Carrick is working under the shadow of long-term fitness concerns over Matthijs de Ligt, while 33-year-old Harry Maguire is edging towards a possible exit at the end of the season. Keep the current group together and United risk standing still. Lose Maguire without a top-level replacement and the squad thins dangerously.
Tapsoba, arriving as a freshly crowned Bundesliga champion, would change the conversation around United’s defensive recruitment in one stroke. It would also help silence a mounting chorus of criticism over the club’s transfer strategy.
On Sky Sports this week, Jamie O’Hara did not hold back.
“I think it’s a disgrace what they’ve done to Carrick,” he said. “They’ve brought him in. They’ve said, ‘We’re going to back you’. They gave him the opportunity. He [has] done a fantastic job last season to get them back in the Champions League, and they’ve given him two players.
“Youri Tielemans is alright. Great signing. And Andrey Santos, who’s, you know… we’re not convinced that he’s even a decent player yet.
“Manchester United are miles off it, and we’re talking about them being in the Champions League.
“They’ve got the same back four they had maybe three or four years ago.
“Luke Shaw is going to have another season at left-back. Fair play to him. Harry Maguire at centre-back. Come on.
“Like, we’re talking about Manchester United. They’re meant to be trying to get back amongst it.”
The criticism bites because the picture is familiar: lofty ambitions, thin delivery. Landing Tapsoba at the peak of his powers would not solve every problem at Old Trafford, but it would finally look like a defensive signing in step with the club’s Champions League ambitions rather than its recent drift.
