Marcus Rashford's Future at Barcelona in Doubt as United Reject €15m Bid

Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona chapter, which had seemed destined for a second act, has hit its first major plot twist. Manchester United have rejected Barcelona’s opening offer to sign the England forward on a permanent deal, leaving his future hanging in the balance just weeks before pre-season begins.

The Catalan club, encouraged by Rashford’s impressive loan spell, made their move to keep him. The proposal? Around €15 million. United’s response was swift and emphatic: no.

A €30m promise, a €15m reality

When the loan was agreed, the two clubs settled on a €30 million purchase option. It was supposed to be the roadmap for a permanent transfer if all sides were satisfied. Rashford did his part on the pitch. Barcelona, though, are now pushing back on the price.

Their opening bid, effectively half of the pre-agreed figure, was less a serious closing offer and more a test of United’s resolve. The answer underlined the scale of the gap between the clubs’ valuations. Barcelona see €30 million as excessive in their current financial climate. United, for now, see no reason to significantly climb down.

That leaves Rashford stranded between a club he wants to stay at and a club that no longer views him as central to its long-term project but still demands a proper fee.

Rashford caught in the middle

Rashford’s preference is clear: he wants Barcelona. His performances on loan, the fit in the team, the feeling of a fresh start away from Old Trafford – all of it pointed towards a permanent move. But desire doesn’t pay transfer fees.

United are expected to bring him back into the fold for pre-season when training resumes. On paper, he will be just another player reporting for duty. In reality, there is little belief around the situation that he will be part of the club’s plans once the competitive games begin.

So he returns to Manchester as an asset rather than a cornerstone, waiting for the market to move.

Anthony Gordon complicates the picture

As if the numbers weren’t tricky enough, Barcelona’s own transfer activity has made Rashford’s path even narrower.

The arrival of Anthony Gordon has reshaped the competition for attacking places. Gordon brings energy, direct running, and a significant investment that will demand minutes. For Rashford, that changes everything.

During his loan spell, he enjoyed a clearer route to the starting XI, a role that allowed him to rebuild confidence and rhythm. If Barcelona somehow bridge the financial gap with United, he would walk back into a very different dressing room – one where his place is no longer anything like guaranteed.

The equation is brutal. Barcelona must first find an agreement with United. Then Rashford must fight through a more crowded, more expensive attacking line than the one he left.

For now, the deal sits in limbo: a player who wants to stay, a selling club holding firm on price, and a buying club juggling budgets and a packed forward line. Something will have to give – the fee, the interest, or Rashford’s Barcelona dream.
